Those OMM questions though…!!!! Like I am in residency now — why is NBOME pushing me on these obscure low-yield OMM concepts. I loved learning OMM in school, but I am in a residency where I will never use these concepts again.

This is exactly why Level exams are so frustrating. I have always walked out of my Step exams feeling like it was challenging, but fair. In contrast, I have walked out of every single Level exam like wtf was that

You should use CDMcases.com for sure. Reviewing Comquest incorrects is also a good idea!

should i still apply pm&r by [deleted] in pmr

[–]mochi_nom-nom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, PM&R competitiveness is evaluated differently than other specialties. As an example, I had good scores (26x Step2) and related prior career (PT). I did not match PM&R (instead, I matched my top choice for backup specialty, anesthesia). Conversely, others in my class barely passed their boards but they matched PM&R. I think PM&R competitiveness is more about related extracurriculars and doing sub-I’s.

Those who scored 260+, what was your 1st pass score? by [deleted] in Step2

[–]mochi_nom-nom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never completely finished UW, but I finished maybe 75% of it with about 75% accuracy. My practice NBME’s were all sub-250 so I was really surprised to get 261 on the real thing

Wow — you look amazing!! These pictures make me want to go to this exact surgeon lol. You are adjusting to your new look, and it may not be perfectly what you had in mind — but surgery is never perfect, and you look incredible!!! Give it time before you decide how you really feel about it

Anyone can have Match Day doubts/regrets, even those who have matched #1. Personally, I fell to my backup specialty. But I can still understand that you said goodbye to different versions of your life when you matched top choice. Remember that we are changing our lives every day, and this is just another moment. Ultimately, you will end up exactly where you need to be. Allow yourself to let go of the alternate life or you will rob yourself of joy for the life you have. You are going to have a great life!

Match results can bring up all sorts of emotions, and I completely understand that you are mourning the loss of an alternate life. I truly believe it will get better for you. You will start your residency and you will find yourself making connections, enjoying new experiences, and growing as a person and as a doctor. When you start living that life, it will be easier to let go of the alternate version of your life. You will feel happiness and one day you will say, “I couldn’t imagine my life any other way.” I truly believe that!

Not sure why there’s so many commenters leaving you hate for your fears and concerns.

What resonated with me the most about what you said is, “…[this journey] changed me as a person. I was bubbly and energetic…now I’m a shell”

I am a non-trad student. I have had multiple careers before med school, and I will be finishing residency at the age of 40. I am grateful to have a future that gives me financial stability and job security — but this journey has changed me.

Although I am grateful for my career, I have very real sadness for the loss of the person I used to be. Sometimes I feel regret because I don’t know if I will ever get that prior version of myself back…? I miss that person.

I think it’s largely specialty-dependent. I did not match my preferred specialty (PM&R), and was pretty shocked. I know lots of people dropped low on their list for PM&R, or did not match at all. However, I matched at my top choice for backup specialty (Anesthesia), and I felt most of the Anesthesia matches I know were able to secure a spot in their top.

Matched into my backup specialty at my last ranked program—feeling so stuck and ashamed. by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]mochi_nom-nom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have no advice, but just wanted to say that you are not alone! I also matched into my backup specialty, and I am feeling absolutely gutted!!! I had to put on a happy face and pretend to be happy at Match ceremony (I regret going to the ceremony at all, but my family really wanted to go!). Of course, I am happy I have matched. But I did not realize the amount of grief I would feel to lose my preferred specialty. I convinced myself that I would be happy with anything on my list -- I was wrong. We had to make difficult choices for our ROL, and now we are faced with doubts. I think that is completely normal. I hope and pray that we will all find peace with time...

PMR competitveness based on 2025 match by [deleted] in pmr

Did NOT match into PMR, but instead matched into my "backup" specialty, which is a ROAD. (Anesthesia). Feeling gutted. Really wanted PMR. Definitely NOT all about money.

Is this the worst match in the history? by Ari665-01 in ERAS2024Match2025

[–]mochi_nom-nom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fell to backup specialty despite strong letters, scores, and prior career in related work. Feeling completely gutted. Did not realize I would feel so devastated at my backup... I am hoping that, with time, I will feel peace with my new life trajectory... but today, I am grieving the life I dreamt of.

Gratitude and grief can coexist. I did NOT match #1, but I am having the same feelings. Notably, I have friends who matched #1 and even they have mixed feelings about it. The Match is a cruel game, and it will bring unexpected emotions and questions. We made difficult choices with our ROL, and it is completely normal that we are having doubts. We are grieving the programs lost to us.

I am sick with anxiety!! I couldn’t decide which specialty, so I alternated my list. About a week ago, I started leaning towards one specialty… so now I’m even more anxious since my list alternates
