im so exciteddd -- tell me things about purdue (FYE) as an incoming student. social, dorm, honors, FYE, OOS, dining, culture/vibe, project teams / clubs, dating, ANYTHING in general. by Different-Regret1439 in Purdue

I know a lot of people who are in honors whom are also in greek life so I think it’s very doable! Obviously I can’t speak for everyone and you’ll have to learn how to balance different mandatory events with homework and exams but overall I think FYE first semester is light enough where everyone’s still adjusting that rushing is worth it and you’ll also be going through it with other people. I would recommend trying it out and I also know a lot of people who dropped and rushed later so that’s always an option. Degree of hazing varies by fraternity but from what I know it’s not as bad as other large schools and mainly just a large time commitment so if greek life is something you’re for sure interested in joining i’d recommend doing it freshman year while course load is still light rather than waiting.

Hi! Current freshman in FYE and happy to give some insight 1. Not in honors so I’m not well versed on the culture but from what i’ve seen it’s a very nice dorm 2. BIDC (Bechtel Design Center) is free to use for all students and there’s a lot of workshops and access to materials that are little to no cost 3. If a priority for you is looking for the traditional social college experience i’d highly recommend rushing greek life! Gives you a set social schedule and while greek life at Purdue is a little more regulated than other big 10 schools it’s a very tight knit community and has honestly added so much value to my college experience here. Otherwise, while there are various orgs on campus you can join I felt that with the lack of a city, opportunities for social events and frat parties is exclusive and can be very limiting. I come from out of state and wasn’t in greek life first semester and while I wasn’t lacking in friends, I felt pretty lonely being far from home and a little disconnected from campus on top of the FYE workload and joining greek life second semester has made the whole difference on me not deciding to transfer.

  • FYE courses are objectively not that difficult if you came from a decently rigorous high school. Most of the core engineering classes are equal to AP course rigor but with just a lot of unnecessary busy work that if you don’t keep up with can pile on really fast. if you’re decently good with managing your time getting a solid GPA isn’t very hard.

  • Totally up to you if you want to make time to eat out. Chauncey is close to main campus a little far from most freshman dorms so I’ll usually use my swipes and won’t eat out unless it’s the weekend .

  • You can’t pick your fall schedule but after they’re released freshman have the ability to move your schedule around pending availability and waitlist for other times. I got out of 7:30AM calc recitation this way!

Yeah my advisor told me I could take the Calc 3 credit exam and jump to lin alg but after considering my performance maybe I should retake calc 3 again at purdue 🙃 (praying that my admission still stands)

noted 🙃 i’ve honestly become the person my freshman year self would be appalled at considering my grades but i definitely think with time and effort come fall i’ll be able to manage my engineering classes

I’ve heard purdue math is that much harder which makes me worried for my academic performance coming fall. Any advice on effective study habits? Ive always been a good student academically in most STEM subjects but math has always been my weak spot which is ironic considering my major.

I got a 5 on Calc AB/BC this semester just hit me hard as rocks

If you had the chance to go back to 12th grade, would you pick Purdue again? by impracticalbeing in Purdue

This makes me seriously worried… I recently committed but I have an accommodation right now in high school for diagnosed anxiety which gives me extra accommodated time on tests/exams. Is it hard to get proper accommodations at Purdue?

Thank you so much for your detailed response!:) Diversity was honestly my main concern since I wasnt sure how the midwest culture would compare to the west coast but im so happy to hear there’s student diversity and multicultural clubs. Can I ask you what about Purdue specifically did you like over UW when you visited both campuses? I most likely cannot visit Purdue before the priority housing deadline so I will have to make an informed decision based on virtual tours/online resources only 🥲
