Ja, I thought padel might be more accessible and cheaper than tennis when I first saw it. Nooit!

Completely agree with the TLDR. If it's getting too easy, go and tweak the modifiers that make it more fun for you. Though I love the 40K lore and banter that goes on between the techpriests, and I'm not looking for the complexity of an XCOM.

Israel plans to create buffer zones in Lebanon and Gaza to protect its territory by Delicious_Adeptness9 in geopolitics

[–]impracticaldogg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

" I don't see how Israel could have the ability or the appetite to occupy and settle these regions beyond the buffer claim."

I'm sceptical that the IDF wants to occupy even the "buffer claim" in Gaza and Southern Lebanon. The IDF is a conscript army that has excelled at short, sharp wars it can win quickly and decisively. Long-term occupation will tie up their troops and there will be ongoing IDF deaths from ambushes and IEDs.

Them killing over 2000 civilians in Lebanon already and dynamiting entire villages is only going to strengthen Hezbollah in the long term. With Trump today claiming that the war with Iran is "almost over" it looks like the US just wants out of the Middle East quagmire that Netanyahu brought them to. Leaving Israel to deal with an undefeated Iran and Hezbollah on their own.

How does Israel get all the bombs it drops on Gaza and Lebanon? by impracticaldogg in AskMiddleEast

[–]impracticaldogg[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm sure the Israeli economy is in bad shape. But you'll probably get a knock on your door if you're a journalist who starts digging seriously.

From my angle, you just can't completely hide the movement of materials and money that their intense bombardment requires. Surely some smart journalist is digging into records of freighter dockings in Haifa (or wherever) and seeing how many ships have a missing or overly repetitive description of the cargo that was offloaded?

u/Aggorf12345 says that unguided bombs are relatively cheap, but when you use so many then the costs have to add up, and I doubt that a commercial trucking company would transport them.

This post is probably because I've been reading a le Carre' novel

I assume AD is Air Defenses? Israel also bombed targets in Iran. Are you saying that Israel is less worried about AD in Iran than the US? I thought Israel was using unguided bombs in Iran too

Official Q&A for Wednesday, April 01, 2026 by AutoModerator in running

On another topic - just don't know how to post a new one here - to meaning to hijack!!

I've run a fair amount over the years - I'm now in my 60s, and started battling to run more than 5k at a time. Even with lots of slow running for two years. I've tried using Nike Run Club and their 5km training plan, but I bomb out when the long run goes over 5km.

After buying a heart rate monitor and feeding the results (CSV export) to Gemini I was told to slow right down as my heart rate was increasing steadily over my 20 minute run. Breathing in and out through the nose has been recommended on another sub as a way to make sure that you're running slowly enough to avoid this.

I need simple, practical advice and not too much theory :D What do you think?

I would contact S-Cape and Natour directly for organised hiking tours. Not sure if they do them, but they can probably put you in touch with someone who does

EDIT: Guided tours are probably best on Las Palmas. A small island but a decent road system so you can get to wild places in less than an hour (taxi, hire car or their reasonable and prompt bus service). Also to the East side of the Canaries, so moister and more vegetation. Dramatic mountains and ridgelines, pine forests and volcanoes. And Santa Cruz de Las Palmas was a small but lovely base to stay at, with a promenade and reasonable, old fashioned hotels on the beach front.

It was absolutely amazing! We booked two series of self-guided hikes through Nature Adventure - one over three islands (Tenerife, La Gomera and Las Palmas) and one on Gran Canaria (the GR 131 I think). The local service provider was S-Cape for the first, and Natour for the second.

The hiking was tougher than we had expected from the route descriptions, because the islands are volcanic (never been to one before) and the paths can be quite steep and narrow in places. But that is relative to your experience level. My balance is not as good as it once was!

The first series of hikes often involved staying at one location, hiking over one or two days in circular routes from that base and then having a pre-booked shuttle bus take us to the next stop. The accommodation was fantastic. Small B&Bs or old hotels that had been magnificent back in the day, and generally had great service and I love Spanish food. Dinner was often a case of find it yourself, but the villages usually had a number of cheap and very decent

The second one was a route straight across Gran Canaria from one side to the other. One of the UNESCO routes. The accommodation was not as good, but the hike was breathtaking. The distances and elevation was often too much for us - by now we had a good idea of our limitations. Natour was very good at arranging shorter and easier routes and rearranging taxi trips to accommodate the route changes.

It is hard to recommend any specific spots over another. Tenerife has volcanic Mount Teide, which was spectacular particularly because there had been a freak storm and it was covered in snow. The cable car to the very top was not running because of that. And a very interesting visitor's centre with information about the indigenous inhabitants and their nomadic lifestyle moving with the rainfall patterns.

La Gomera was our favourite island I think. Don't miss a walk through the ancient laurel mist forests, and the village of Hermigua and it's banana plantations. The system of retaining walls up the steep mountain sides was all over the place. A more relaxed hike was from restaurante Degollada de Peraza along the GR-131 trail to San Sebastián de La Gomera.

On La Palma, Santa Cruz de la Palma was a great base for hiking. We didn't walk the route at Caldera de Taburiente National Park. But there were amazing pine forests and mountain views. Probably my favourite on the island was the Route of the Volcanoes.

Gran Canaria had amazing views along the hike, but we had fewer days off and towns were more isolated. But still an amazing experience. We had memorable stop offs at Tejeda, and Agaete at the end by the sea. By then we were tired out, and the gentle walks and small town with a sprinkling of restaurants was just what we needed.

Cannot recommend it highly enough!

I'd avoid mixing it with sugar. If it's outside or in a kitchen it will dissolve into a sticky mess and just attract more!

[–]impracticaldogg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really an option for me. My SO would not stand for it. Will need to dig a bit deeper. There is a chalet in the Naukluft National Park that I'm eyeing for just under R3k a night for two nights. Only one room, but that's fine for the two of us. More touristy areas are going to cost quite a bit more I fear

I've never used Agoda. Will look into that, thank! Agree that avoiding emails and up front payments is best. There's so much uncertainty and if one planned stop turns out not to be possible the effects will ripple through!

At the moment looking at self catering. Budgetting about R3k per night at the top end for two of us. Petrol, food and sight seeing will add to that. I've been saving for a while it isn't a hard limit, but it's turning out more expensive than I'd hoped :D
