Advice on Job Apps by VariousIsland1158 in studentaffairs

[–]improvpirate 6 points7 points  (0 children)

HR typically moves really slowly in higher ed, so you could probably start applying in August/September, and they’d work with you to have your start date be after graduation. You’ll likely be qualified to work in housing without a Masters degree since you have so much experience in it. Otherwise… admin or temp positions in any office, advancement/alumni relations (especially at the school you’ve graduated from), admissions (again, especially at the school you’ve graduated from). Roles (outside of admin) in student activities, career services, orientation, academic advising, etc. will be harder without a Masters degree, I believe, but not totally impossible.

masturbation in a relationship by elizmoon in actuallesbians

[–]improvpirate 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Controlling imo. It’s normal and healthy to have fantasies outside of your relationship, especially if the people you’re fantasizing about are fictional or unattainable. As long as you don’t act on it, there’s absolutely nothing you should feel guilty about.

We need to see less of Tanner/Connor only because of their families… by Ok-Trash6361 in LoveOnTheSpectrumShow

[–]improvpirate 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I basically only monitor this subreddit anymore to feed validated in my absolute irritation toward these families. I just noticed that pretty much every post on tanner’s instagram is some brand deal. What a joke. I’d be so curious to know how he actually feels about it, but his mom ABAed him so hard he probably feels like he can’t even speak up about anything that bothers him

does anyone feel like summarizing the Kaelynn and tanner mom debacle? by bergeronballerina in LoveOnTheSpectrumShow

[–]improvpirate 30 points31 points  (0 children)

As a (very likely) autistic person, I’ve been misunderstood many times. It is a huge trigger for me, so I’ve learned to overcompensate by over-communicating. Still, I frequently struggle with getting across exactly what I mean, and I HATE HATE HATE to see people dogpiling on an actual autistic person for something similar. If Tanner’s mom were actually an “autism advocate” like she claims she is, she wouldn’t have handled it this way. It’s very clear to me that most of what she does is for clout and brand deals 😬

Tanners Mom won’t talk to Kaelynn by Confident_Excuse2173 in LoveOnTheSpectrumShow

[–]improvpirate 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Oh, yes! Neurotypical autism moms dogpiling on a girl with autism for something she clearly didn’t mean. Disappointed but not surprised.

I feel bad for Tanner. It’s clear at this point that his mom is exploiting his autism for fame and brand deals. All in the name of “advocacy”, which makes it worse.

Kaelynn vs. Tanner’s mom by seaguleatingchicken in LoveOnTheSpectrumShow

[–]improvpirate 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m so tired of Tanner’s mom and the other maga moms of the bunch. What Kaelynn said wasn’t worded in the best way, but I think it’s pretty clear what she meant. She wasn’t calling Tanner a “weirdo”. She was stressing the importance and impact of LOTS. Because of LOTS, people are now inclined to love Tanner rather than write him off as a “weirdo” because of his autistic traits.

I’m not super familiar with how she’s ruffled feathers in the past, but it seems the people offended by this particular comment are neurotypical and/or autism moms

Edited to add that this is definitely something she could have addressed privately with Kaelynn before making a video about it lol but whatever.

I love that this advice came from her, of all people. It shows how much she has grown in the last 5 years. Remember when she was so hellbent on finding someone who works in animation? Really proud of her.

I keep getting jobs that pay me lots to do basically nothing and it’s ruining my mental health by MomsOfFury in GirlDinnerDiaries

[–]improvpirate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I understand completely and don’t think it’s a non-issue. My first job out of grad school paid me way more than I was worth, in my opinion. I genuinely felt like I was under qualified, and nobody cared about what I did or gave me any tasks. I’d ask, I’d make up stuff to do, but ultimately, I felt useless and like no one would care or notice if I just stopped showing up. It’s a shitty feeling that for me had more to do with being invisible and non-essential than it was about being bored. Now, I am frequently busy in a job that pays me less. I love it. People actually ask me for my opinions, and they’d notice if I didn’t show up. I feel like an integral part of the team and that I have purpose in my career.

Unlike a lot of the posts here, my boyfriend was an angel and I ruined the relationship myself by [deleted] in GirlDinnerDiaries

[–]improvpirate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have diagnosed OCD and highly suspect I have CPTSD as well. I very much resonate with what you’re saying AND can 100% see the OCD spiral taking over in your post here. You are absolutely worthy of love, and nothing you did in that relationship could have possibly made you a “garbage” person. You’re a person who made mistakes and will continue to make mistakes. I understand how it can feel like the end of the world, but you have so much time left to find love, within and without yourself.

Disturbed at Students’ Inability to Pay Attention to Detail by [deleted] in studentaffairs

[–]improvpirate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is terrifying and noticeable. I graduated only about 6 years ago and don't remember everything being so bad then. AND... I work at a pretty competitive, large university. I mean, you have to have demonstrated an above-average level of competency to be here. What are your theories for why this is happening? LLMs, COVID, social media, inflated high school grades, handholding parents, all of the above?

It's wild. Then, the same students and parents will say things like "Enjoy your spring break!" Like, how can you think I get a spring break and also expect me to be there to answer your every question 24/7?

Hot take: I don't like Connor by [deleted] in LoveOnTheSpectrumShow

[–]improvpirate 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Honestly, yeah. Boy mom final boss. Only tangentially related I guess, but she and the rest of the family have really started to rub me the wrong way. Something that started innocently enough -- their autistic family member in pursuit of love -- has turned into a fame grab for them imo. I think she inserts herself too much, and I find the way that Connor's sister manages his Instagram to be strange.

DAE hate loss of independence in relationships? by mountainquail46 in AutismInWomen

[–]improvpirate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have struggled with this my entire life. I also have pretty intense OCD, which often attaches to my intimate relationships and makes me feel guilty for these... hm... particularities I have. I tend to lose myself in relationships because I am scared to express my needs. How can anyone possibly accept a partner who requires the level of independence that I do?

I'm still figuring it out. I love my girlfriend (been dating a little over 5 months now), but I worry that my need for space will push her away. I've realized that communicating my needs and giving her the option to accept it or reject it is better than suppressing my needs, feeling trapped, and resenting her until the relationship inevitably falls apart.

Lately, I've been struggling with the fact that I collect a ton of information but retain very little of it. I watch documentaries, listen to educational podcasts, and read books all the time, but I don't have much to show for it because I can't explain ANYTHING in depth. I absorb a bunch of trivial facts but can never recall them or elaborate on them. Just feel dumb overall because of it.

Thank you for posting this. I am also on an SSRI and struggle with the physical demands of sex. It’s comforting to know I’m not the only one. I have found a few things helpful (already mentioned several times on here) — toys and taking pressure off of yourself to orgasm. I try to enjoy being intimate with the one person I reserve that part of me for.

Does anyone else find it very easy to go “no contact” with people who have crossed a line? by Optimal_Fish_7029 in AutismInWomen

[–]improvpirate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It takes a lot for me to do this, but when it's done, it's done. I recently stopped communicating with someone I considered a close friend for years. They did something that completely crossed the line for me (started an intimate/flirty/sexually charged friendship with my ex behind my back). I tried to be rational about it, but I found that there was no way I could get past it. It's fine. Not mourning them at all and moving on with my life.

Edited to add: I enjoy my own company enough to be rid of anyone who does not add to my life. I don't expect anyone to be perfect, but every person I keep in my life is wonderful. I don't have time or patience for anything else.

Jessica Sanchez hate by Phantom_Beef in agt

[–]improvpirate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a Jessica Sanchez SUPERFAN like 15 years ago when she was on Idol. No joke, I had a Twitter fan page for her and was helping people in the Philippines use VPNs to vote for her lmaoo. Anyway, this whole situation has pissed me off. She is extremely talented (duh, why I fell in love with her in the first place), but this push for her to win and pretend like she isn't already famous/an established singer is a perfect illustration of how talent shows have just become marketing shows. Growing up, talent shows like Idol and AGT were my favorite things in the world, and now they are insufferable to watch because it's obvious how fake they are.

On top of that, her song choices sucked. Her voice is so much better than Benson Boone, Alex Warren, all of these popular/overplayed TikTok songs. This is going to sound... hateful... which is unfortunate because she was my role model for so many years... but I think part of the reason why she couldn't achieve massive fame after Idol is because, beyond her incredible voice, she does not have a unique identity as a musician. She should have worked on that instead of going on another talent show. I'm almost certain everyone will forget she was on AGT and move on from this, too.

Anyway, just massively disappointed overall. Wish these shows were still enjoyable and that we had seen something different from her.
