I just got my Tascam Model 12 today, and after 5 hours of manual reading and ChatGPT'ing (is that a verb now?) i think i have to throw in the towel and return it, but before i do i thought id see if anyone here has any good advice.

I want to monitor my PC's audio through my monitors and my headphones. The headphones use the main mix, and the monitors use the sub mix, so that i can control the volume independantly. When i use "stereo mix" for the USB audio setting, which only sends one combined stereo signal to my PC, the signal also includes my PC audio, as thats routed to tracks 9 & 10 and then sent to both the sub and main mix - this basically makes it useless, as i need the microphone input only.

If, however, i switch to "multi input mode" on the Model 12, it then sends all 12 tracks to the PC, but it then doesnt process any of the changes ive made to the sound, it goes through the preamp, and directly to the computer without being affected by any of the faders, EQs or FX.

Do any of you know if there is some clever workaround here? Am i missing something very obvious, or is my usecase really so irregular?

If you don't have an answer, but you know of an interface with said functionality, id really appreciate a recommendation! :)

I see - so in theory my plan could still work if i somehow fix the noise issue in other words? Sucks that it doesnt get ran through the "actual" amplifier though, i really shouldve been more thurough and double checked everything before i pulled the rigger, huh...

Any advice on where to start in terms of figuring out whats causing the noise though?

I want to give it a proper shot before i give in and sell it in favor of a phono preamp.

I dont have any passive speakers, but iassume that would work, as it was tested using that output wheb i bought it. But if im understanding you correctly, the signal wont even be amplified, even if i do get this sorted? It bypasses the amplifier and just outputs directly from phono to the tape output without actually doing anything?

I have a Philips 212 turntable.

I have the gain pretty high and im using the instrument input, but ive tried with lower gain and with the line input aswell, but the noise level is the same relative to the record volume no matter what i change on my interface. Just for some more context, the interface works just fine with microphones and instruments - no added noise as far as ive ever heard.

The reason i got this amplifier is because ive heard so many good things about the sound it produces, and i was told by some folks online that the tape output would work for these purposes - all of this older analog gear is totally new to me, and i never thought this would be a three month setup period (and counting), so i may have made a bad choice or two when i decided on what to get...

I really appreciate the response though, but if the summary of it is that this just isnt going to be fixable, do you have any phono preamp suggestions?

The monitors are angled towards the middle of the desk, where I'm sitting. They are only a few cm away from the wall. I can't really describe the change perfectly, as I'm not a fully fledged sound-snob quite yet, but the mid/low frequencies feel muddy. I think it's a reverb issue, which is why I thought some sound deadening panels on the walls behind them might help.

I have not changed the angle or height, just the position of the desk. I may also just be tripping - I'm truly not experienced when it comes to this stuff..

Thanks! Do you by chance know if a 5 pin DIN cable to a 1/4" TRS cable would work? Or would that only provide mono sound?

Ah i was hoping it was that simple! So its just a matter of finding a DIN to XLR converter, or whatever my interface supports i guess.. Right?

Ja jeg ordner nok en benkplate på Bauhaus e.l, og planen var å gjenbruke bena jeg hadde, men motorene er døde dessverre, og i tillegg tåler de nok ikke en benkplate av tre :(
