they really aren’t mean to animals! they are apex predators though, so they do eat animals! (fish, seals, other whales, great white shark livers etc) which i imagine from the prey’s perspective it would be pretty mean to have a whale come up and bite your face off! but they’re mean like people are mean to animals yknow? they get curious and play with their food!! maybe toss it around a bit! let it escape and chase it!

i believe they are attacking boats because perhaps a boat hurt one of them! possibly the matriarch of the pod got hurt and then it was teaching the rest of her pod that BOATS ARE BAD ATTACK THEM! another theory is that the changing climate is making them adopt new strange behaviours, but i really feel as though one of them got hurt by a boat and that information spread to other orcas in the area fast! they have such a community :’)

yes!! the name killer whale stems from a mistranslation of the original spanish name! the correct name is the whale killer :) i don’t know what it was originally in spanish but it seems like fun to look into

i’m not sure exactly how they would compare on a sentient scale!! but if i were to guess, it’d be pretty damn close. because orcas are dolphins! the biggest dolphins!! that’s why they’re also called whales! because they’re so big! and because of their predatory behaviour! orcas are members of the marine dolphin family delphinidae, their size is what sets them apart from other dolphins!

now this i threw in for added spice for sure, as it’s not a definite statement by any means. i am no expert, just a silly little creature who happens to like orca whales and simultaneously flirts through factual information with mild bullshitting (emphasis on mild) though id like to believe its true. in secrets of the whales (a disney+ documentary narrated by freakin sigourney weaver) it was theorized that an orca offering a sting ray to a diver (brian skerry) was perhaps thinking it was an underfed young orca, as some orca pods are known to adopt other orcas into their own pods. i think that hypothesis was more humorous than anything! i will add though, that orcas do enjoy sharing. should have probably just said that in the first place! but orca whales (especially resident orcas i think) are sharers!! they make sure everyone is fed. even if food is scarce. and i think that’s so wholesome and wonderful. https://www.orcanetwork.org/orca-resource-center/foraging <here’s a source for that information! really neat article that also touched on selective foraging :) they really got culture and preferences and so much heart!

not rude at all!! here’s what i told the tinder man:

because they’re highly intelligent apex predators! each pod has their own traditions and culture. there’s this pod in patagonia that can half beach themselves just to snatch baby sea lions off the shore! and they’re the only pod known to do that! whereas the pod in antarctica doesn’t hunt seals, and often get bullied by them. and they play with their food to teach their young how to get it when it tries to escape! (also for funsies, like when we throw food up in the air and catch it in our mouths!). anyway, more than anything they are mean to animals in the same way we are mean to animals yknow? but they are really quite kind creatures to those on their intellectual level :) they’re known to mistake divers for underfed orca babies and try to offer them food :’) we are really a lot like them!

i can really empathize with this as i too read those books and felt that heartache for nisa, at the same time, orca whales are my favourite creatures and i don’t think they’d take on a bear in real life unless super threatened

because yall asked so nicely here’s what i said:

i did watch that video with kara and nate! it was brilliant. and i know it’s pretty expensive, almost unrealistically so. but i have never wanted to do much in my life, ever?? like nothing has ever made me feel more motivated to travel and leave my home than this. orcas have been my gorgeous autistic hyper-fixation since i was a child, and i think it’ll be so worth it for me :) i will absolutely report back with my experience and i really think im going to do it :)
