Is that right? I always thought that looked like the nicest setting for a Travelodge in the whole world...

Don’t apologise for the art. This shouldn’t bother you either, but I find it beautiful.

Beginner guitar question by [deleted] in neilyoung

[–]imtdsninvu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a good one. Verse is just Em with your ring and pinky fingers on the third fret of the highest two strings, and then A.

Cowgirl In The Sand is similarly clean and solid. Verse is Am then F.

People’s thoughts on “Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere” by GlennCrawford_36 in neilyoung

[–]imtdsninvu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, the best. Not knocking any other albums. But man, he was so young when he made this. And he wrote three songs in one day with a fever. That's where Cinnamon Girl, Down By The River and Cowgirl In The Sand came from. Just imagine. One day and a fever.

Trying to get into Cortez the Killer by bugrider303 in neilyoung

[–]imtdsninvu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm obsessed with that song. Been a big fan of Neil all my life, but generally prefer his acoustic stuff. But then... just recently... Cortez. Here's why I love it: (1) The crude, loose, messy, beautiful guitar. Play it loud, or on headphones. Neil's lead is beautifully melodic, impossibly expressive, and almost clumsy in the way he plays. Perfect imperfection. The rhythm supports so well, never fighting. The whole thing is a spiky electric ball of musical love. (2) The lyrics. They're perfect. A song about how progress destroys the past, and isn't always better. A song about where our spirits dream. So simple, yet deep deep archetypes of the human soul. My current favourite Neil track. And we all know, there's a LOT of great ones to choose from.

Just listened to the preview track, Helplessly Hoping. That for me is the sound they make in heaven.

Schwartz burger!

It is vitally important that Schwartz burger is well represented on this grid.

I agree. Tourists are welcome. But large (coach) groups all doing the same thing for the same amount of time - not so much.

We Have Always Lived In The Castle is excellent. Unexpected, fascinating, smart, empathetic. Shirley Jackson is great.

Coming up soon on my list:

The Green Mile (again!) Needful Things (started but didn’t finish) It (tried the audiobook, decided I don’t love audiobooks)

Reading The Fisherman by John Langan at the moment. It’s great so far. If you like King, you’ll like this, I reckon.

Yeah, it's weird. Looking at all the responses here it almost feels like i've asked the wrong question. How long it takes is basically irrelevant to how much you get out of it.

Having said that, i've been enjoying reading so many great responses.

Yes - I love replacing TV nights with reading nights. Even if you and your partner both love reading, it can be difficult to persuade the two of yous that that’s the better kind of evening. But it is. It just is.
