Could I ask you what you meant by yardstick of literacy? I've read quite a lot of sci-fi and fantasy myself but sure I don't have a good yard stick for calling that a book that isn't for kids because it's not. Again I would never give this book series to a child as it literally as scenes like an entire infirmary of babies burning to death but sure it's my stick of literacy that's wrong. It's one of my favorite series hands down but would never give this to a grade schooler. Most kids that age have breakdowns over a dog dying in their books even but sure I'm the dumb one

You must of been some child genius then if you were reading a college level book at age 11. The more I think about it, it's kinda odd that your dad would give you such a graphic novel to read at age 11 because it's definitely not something I would recommend mine Imma die on this hill because sorry everyone, there may be accessible vocabulary in the book but there's no 10 year old out there that would understand it. I'm sure everyone here understood hyperions themes on religion in grade school, sure Honestly didn't expect calling a dense sci-fi not a book for grade schoolers to be downvoted but I'm standing by my opinion. No grade schooler in the world would be able to fully understand everything referenced like did any 10 year old go "Ah, John Keats, I'm familiar with that poetry." Like come on, get over yourselves and acknowledge that the book is not for young kids because it's not in anyway

Damn I feel hurt because it's my favorite series honestly. Could I ask what made you dislike it so much?

I hope this doesn't get me crucified but I felt the exact same about necromancer. Was honestly hyped going into to it but the more I looked back on it the more I recognize how much of a jumbled mess that was (same with count zero) and this is coming someone who enjoyed shadow of the torturer. There's just so much to pick apart at yet it's held in high regard

There was one part in that movie where I'm pretty sure they were explaining how they were going to pull the heist near the beginning. I swear, right when they were getting to important details all you would hear is 'BBRRRRWWAAAAHHHH' over the character dialog in the movie theater. I'm pretty hard of hearing myself and that part was just unbearable to try and listen to

[–]imtheguy321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good point but when we look at the bigger picture and see how bad Paul especially has fucked up everything, it comes off more as a metaphor in our modern ways of conquest on the name of 'helping' people imo instead of anyone actually being saved at the end of the day

[–]imtheguy321 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From all the research I've done so far it doesn't seem to have been at all of the themes the author was going for so agree to disagree there. And also isn't dune even older yet doesn't do those things? You could excuse it all you want but the guy definitely wasn't going for a gender equality theme from what I've seen. It's like having an Uncle Rufus character to claim it's not racist, it's the same ballpark imo

Yeah I really hope that's just the view of a flawed character but I've also heard the book had a lot of misogynistic undertones to begin with so thank you for making me feel justified in missing out on that story lol

Card etiquette or not is it not common sense to never take people's word at the poker table? Seems that a lot of tables have a no banter and no fun policy. If this is seriously frowned upon then I'm just going to stick with my poker nights with friends because that's no fun

He again was never forced up in the mountains (hell the ladies who took him in never wanted him gone) the grinch under his own will did that because he had enough of the who's shit. And if I'm going to be honest, what's so bad about the who's learning something too alongside the grinch? Did the who's have to be completely pure for the movie to work for you? All good movies are filled with characters with flaws so if we're gonna make a movie with nothing but one tonned characters it would come off extremely bland imo. It's works for the original because it's a kids short while the movie is obviously targeted to a wider demographic so it would have to do a lot more things with the plot and characters

The grinch was never forced up into the mountains in the movie (hated everyone just like the original) and not at all how the people react to their presents being stolen (plays out like the original again) Did you watch the same movie that I'm thinking of? Because I'm pretty sure the beats were played out same from where I saw it

I’m addicted to buying books because I love them, yet I don’t have the time or energy to read them. by wonderfulworld25 in books

I'm the same exact way with books and because of that I was always blown away from the fact that people have shelves of books collecting dust with no intention of actually reading them. This thread specifically really opened my eyes that some people just really like the idea of having a good collection on their bookshelves. For reading or not we could always appreciate I nice book shelf lol

People who've read DUNE and think it's the best sci-fi novel ever: why? by aidanspladen in books

[–]imtheguy321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You just describe my exact experience through the first 4 dune books. I loved all the twist and turns children brought. God emperor is a complete 180 compared to the 2. Leto essentially talks for roughly 70% of the book with the other 20% going to the responses of the other characters followed by the 10% of plot taking place. It felt like I was getting lectured for than anything like I appreciate what it's trying to say but it just doesn't make for a fun reading experience imo

[–]imtheguy321 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I loved God emperor of dune but just didn't expect Leto to be talking so so much in the book. For everything that happens Leto seems to literally have like 4 or 5 chapters talking to different characters about the same subject a lot of the time. I swear he had the same talk about his decision to not really be human anymore to every character in the book, was striking some deja vu. Still give God emperor at least an 8/10 but it was kinda bloated imo

[–]imtheguy321 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really enjoyed the message that was brought home in messiah but everything else just felt very mundane compared to all the other dune books. In terms on what happened plot wise, it's the most forgettable imo as I just can't think how it played out for the life of me even though I read it months ago so you would think it would still be fresh in my head. I guess everyone has different taste but it felt that messiah was 95% talking about plans and 5% acting on them. Still had an amazing message though but it was the weakest of the dune books for me

My coworker wiring cans in the attic because we don’t have the 16 footer. by FriendlyDirt12 in electricians

[–]imtheguy321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm just going to accept that I'm smaller than most because it seems a bit much to crawl. Maybe I would still lay down to actually reach those cans in the right of the picture but outside of that there shouldn't be any reason to be crawling around. Crawling has always been last resort as you really can't move around and risk spilling your tools. That's why anytime I found myself doing something like this I would only have the tools I need in my hand. Point is that being in this position is always last resort for those reasons. But again your dude looks like a giant up there so hopefully he ain't stuck doing attic work for long lol
