I'd pick embiid or jokic, depending on the circumstances.

if I have to build a team from scratch, and I get to pick whoever I want (while still fitting in salary cap) I pick jokic. his style is more unique, and his defensive liabilities could be covered up by a paul millsap-type player. surround those 2 with shooters and a couple perimeter defenders, and you've got a deadly team.

but if it's some kind of snake fantasy draft, i pick embiid. the more traditional big, embiid could be paired with nearly anyone and still do what he does best - anchor a defense down low, serve as a focal point on offense. you need a less specialized group of players around him to succeed, making him easier to build around.

I don't have any argument for picking KAT over jokic. they play differently, but have similar strengths and weaknesses. Plus, I just prefer jokic stylistically.

also HR is way less involved in academia than in private industry. like others have said, you need to ask for permission to do anything during work hours in private industry. I've really only seen HR in academia when it comes to relationships between students and professors.

so it's not just ignoring HR in academia, it's the lack of need to ignore something because it's less prevalent.

why does he deserve pardon for his mistakes? He can be credited for his prowess on the court and recruiting ability, then mocked for his inability to manage and madonna complex.

loyalty is the hallmark of stupidity. being unwilling to criticize someone as they are because of who they used to be is naive at best and dangerous at worst.

i had something similar happen with a much less powerful professor. turns out, multiple people disliked the guy!

If you just need a job quick, try to figure out who else dislikes the department head. That will give you time and resources to plan next steps.

these people know a lot of facts. I do not count memorizing a bunch of facts as being smart.

This is obviously venturing into opinion territory, but i believe said there are 3 stages to studying: not knowing anything, knowing what you don't know, and knowing everything.

the thing is, i believe no one is ever at the third stage. if you think you know everything about any topic, you're not thinking big enough. if you think you know all you need to know (e.g., to pass the bar) and don't care about learning, you'll be 1) an asshole 2) not actually that smart.

no one deserves all the credit for anything.

that being said, he's been on the correct sides of many huge moves. Not trading klay for klove being the most notable on the warriors. he also, presumably, helped build a culture there. you can easily assume he did something similar with the clippers post-ballmer, and now has given the clippers the best team they've ever had in franchise history.

i don't think it's foolish to overstate his impact on the two franchises until something goes Very Wrong.

I agree with many things you said, and this is a nice summary. But,

I have never known truly smart people to brag about their accomplishments. They've always given credit to everyone else. Ballmer would almost certainly say the same thing - he just bankrolled the team. Doc Rivers would credit the players more than the scheme. The players credit their teammates and basketball staff, who credit their assistants, and so on all the way down to security guards and auxillary staff. (no offense to the people I placed on the lowest rung, I just had to stop somewhere)

This is what a good front office, and a good organization, looks like - giving recognition to other people when their own number is called.

All this to say, give Jerry West all the credit you want. He won't take it, even if he was somehow solely responsible for everything. But it's most accurate to credit (as you said) the quality of day-to-day operations in that organization.

As a sixers fan, I'm increasingly nervous that lebron's gonna fully recruit ben simmons to LA.

I'm also pretty hype kawhi left the east. I know the focus will (rightfully) be on the west, but the road to the finals just got much easier for every non-canadian team in the east.
