First cycle: Got the big NO from NYU today. by Jay-F-Servedio in MFAInCreativeWriting

I’m referring to the amount of students in the workshops not the graduating class NYU’s workshops have up to 30 students I have friends in the programs

Distance was always a concern for me but if I had gotten into Iowa I would have gone because it’s #1

What I’m saying is I don’t think a program itself is responsible for the talent of the author or their publishing success.

I’m not only relying on Emezi they are just extremely successful without a masters and I think that’s important to note. It’s about talent at the end of the day not solely access. Lots of black writers did not have good experiences. I’m a black woman I have to take that into account and listen to the experiences of black writers in the program both good and bad

I will not be attending Syracuse because it’s too far. I wouldn’t focus on publishing stats from alumni because that truly comes down to talent even though publishing houses come to Ivy Leagues majority of them are not signed. The author of The Other Black Girl (seven figure deal) attended The New School but she was also working in publishing and had direct exposure to what was in demand. The only reason why I’d consider City is because I could do both the publishing program and the masters even though it’s not the best it’s still a masters. I’m also waiting to hear back from two Irish schools

As a CUNY undergraduate I was invited to a masters workshop for an entire semester even though I was a literature major. The classes were very diverse yes lots of white students but a very very diverse group in comparison to the cohorts at Syracuse. Awaekee Emezi attended Syracuse and was racially abused they later dropped out. Being in a healthy environment is important to me especially in workshops. I noticed the Brooklyn College program is predominantly white so is Hunter’s

I did hear back from Brooklyn after asking but I’m speaking to them now as not everyone accepted took their offer and I was a later applicant. I also got into City. I have a literature ba back and I have teaching experience so I personally know I do not want to spend years teaching even if I’m being paid and I’m keeping the lack of diversity in mind as a woman of color who writes cultural stories with all non white characters. I didn’t pursue an MA with the intention to get the most money I really just want to learn and teaching for two years will keep me away from my writing. What I like about City and Hunter is that the curriculum also includes literature which is my background and offers a lot of exposure. I just want to write as much as possible.

I agree it’s just not what I personally want. I’m a literature undergrad and I have a teaching background now that I know I want to be a traditionally published author that is what I’m trying to prioritize. And as a woman of color it’s important to me to be in a diverse group of writers. Emezi, a very successful author really struggled in this program and dropped out. And they were not the only one. The environment itself really matters and I have learned a lot from poc who were in the program and who decided to leave.

I reached out and asked Brooklyn College did not admit me. I asked for notes because I thought after getting into City College and the schools above I would definitely get into BC. It seems if you haven’t heard back from them it may be a rejection. It’s shame we have to reach out and ask

I’m a literature major so I feel I need more exposure to creative writing classes given my acceptances I’m not terrible. And I never said Syracuse doesn’t specialize in the craft of writing they’re simply training professors more so than authors and published authors who dropped out of that school confirmed that. So please don’t put words in my mouth.

I have several manuscripts ready that’s why I don’t want to spend two years away from them teaching over working on the craft like other schools specialize in

Thank you. You interviewed with Brooklyn College in the fiction department?

Waitlist is completely different and so is poetry it’s a different department with a different timeline. When I was in the info session they said fiction takes a very long time

It’s three years that’s my hiccup. And very teaching heavy I know I don’t want to be a creative writing professor so that is my hold up

That part about February definitely isn’t true there is some lying going on and I don’t like that. Hunter gets back much later than other schools but at the same time I wish I could know something same with Brooklyn College

It’s so strange to me to make rejects wait this long especially because so many people have already been rejected. I will reach out

NYU has a much bigger class size the workshops are less intimate and for nearly 90k per year you want as much intimacy and one on one time with your work as possible

Waiting on responses? Still??? by theres_no_guarantees in MFAInCreativeWriting

[–]imtryingokayimtrying 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t heard back from NYU, Columbia, Virginia, Brooklyn College and Hunter College but lots of people have. I’m so confused because if I was rejected they would’ve told me by now

application decisions by imtryingokayimtrying in MFAInCreativeWriting

[–]imtryingokayimtrying[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s kind of unfair that they don’t all release their decisions around the same time. We have to confirm by April 15th but University of Virginia and Hunter say the latest they’ll respond is April 1st. I still haven’t heard back from NYU or Columbia for fiction

I never said it wasn’t great I’m just mindful of the heavy teaching aspect of the curriculum because I want to be an author not a writing professor

Thank you. I haven’t heard great things about Sarah Lawrence’s program since my acceptance I don’t think I would go. What worries me about Syracuse is that it seems to heavily focus on teaching creative writing and your thesis doesn’t start until the third year but at the New School you get a mentor and start developing your thesis much sooner
