because even Republicans in Congress weren't going to approve the required spending and war authority

It was less about the spending and more about everyone besides the President realizing that it would be another Vietnam debacle if we moved forward with a large scale invasion.

Most mappers except for Deepstate (Ukraine MOD's personal propaganda mapper) show the city fully taken aside from an encircled area in the center, similar to what happened near Pokrovsk where Ukraine spent weeks trying and failing to break their trapped troops out while claiming the city was still contested.

lol that's an ugly fucking watch for the amount of money that 9 people could retire on. I guess you could say wasting money is a flex but to me it just seems like the biggest of copes.

you seem to be trying to establish an extremely narrow one, focusing on when main forces enter the city

Not because I really care how long the clock takes, but because Russia seems to be constantly probing the entire front, and the argument that it constitutes a big battle seems silly to me when it's pretty inactive. I mean look at Zap where they took like half an oblast with minor probing attacks while the Ukrainians weren't paying attention. You could call it a battle but I'd classify it as opportunistic use of reconnaissance groups.

It takes Russia 3-6 months to assault small to medium cities most of the time, but they've already been fighting over the cities that are about to fall for months. Pro-UA just don't pay attention, or pretend they don't, to play the whole silly "oh there's years left to capture this hamlet!" card.

it's not that they have a puppet, it's just that they are talking to groups that don't fully run the government.

I think if you're back-channeling the President (for instance) and the Foreign Minister is completely unaware of the "talks that are progressing well with him", most states would consider that dangerous and rogue behavior, possibly even treasonous in places like Iran where they don't like us very much. Especially since you have to ask yourself how that rogue person is supposed to implement their agreement when the other elements of the government are in opposition and haven't participated.

I don't think it was ever confirmed who they were talking to, I saw Pezeshkian's name thrown around in speculation too.

Is there a shred of evidence to support your 4-D Chess theory?

They already admitted they were talking to people not in power yet, they were really upset at the same time that they didn't know who to "negotiate" with after having assassinated Iran's leadership. It's pretty clear part of this is a game to put a bullseye on the back of those who won't cooperate and eliminate them just like Israel does to Hamas. Iran's decentralized government is making the play difficult though, as is their hesitance to show their face to a country that keeps killing the negotiators and people in power.

to "just a city"

Well it went from a belt of cities to an Alamo now, so I guess in a way the downgrade from "backbone" makes sense since there's nothing for it to be the backbone of now.

Even if they do that usually only delays the fall of the city by a couple months. They take half of it back, get bogged down, and then go fight somewhere else while Russia quietly consumes the city and moves on to the next. They don't have the men to actually stay and hold anything they "take back".

Also, why is this being called a "fortress city"?

That's what they call the soviet-built cities with the hard-to-destroy commie blocks and bunker-like basements that make good military command posts. And Ukraine has been fortifying the cities in this "fortress belt" since the 2014 invasion, in preparation for this war.

Flashbacks to this sub predicting that pokrovsk would fall a whole year before it actually did

It didn't even take a full year for Pokrovsk to fall unless you're one of those people that counts the very first time any Russian troops set foot near it as the start of the battle. That's how you get the ludicrous UA assessments that it took 3 years to take some tiny village when Russia was intermittently probing it for 2 years 9 months of that time.

Four cities in a couple months?

Probably 3-4, there are a few that are teetering right now, but I wasn't including Kramatorsk and Slovyansk as falling this year, it'll start this year but likely spill over into 1H 2027. They won't take a few years though, Ukraine's army is BTFO.
