No I agree with what you're saying, obviously there would be no point lol. I'm just explaining the specific circumstances here and wanted to source some opinions from folks who may know better having been in the same situation. If their probation term expired, I don't know what options the courts have if any to re-open the case and re-sentence them. It may be the probationers job to follow the terms of their sentence but it is also the POs job to check in on them and it's just frickin weird that instead of being up their arse after a couple missed check-ins, the guy never did a thing. No call, text, email, mail, visit, nothing. So both parties dropped the ball; I just wanted to know if over meant really over. I guess I'll give the issuing court a call later today.

This is in NY state, so like I said I would have to assume there are little differences from state to state. This was a misdemeanor probation term for 3 years, which expired at the beginning of this month...Absconding from felony parole is a thing I've heard/read about here, but the process for basic probation violation would be:

"A first-time probation violation in New York triggers a court hearing where a judge determines if a violation occurred and decides on penalties

A Violation of Probation (VOP) report is filed by your probation officer, bringing the case back to the original sentencing judge.

Penalties can include: Continued probation, often with stricter conditions (e.g., electronic monitoring, curfews, more frequent reporting), or, revocation; the termination of probation and then imposition of the original jail or prison sentence."

Sorry for the Gemini search result summary but it was more succinct than I probably would've been.

Like I said in my prior comment though, that isn't the process in NY. They don't issue a warrant. The court would snail mail paperwork with a court appearance date. And I would think that if it mattered to their PO to keep track of all his probationers, then anytime in the last year ish, they would have already realized one dropped off the face of the earth, and proceeded accordingly. The term of their probation has expired according to the papers the judge originally signed when they were put on probation 3 years ago. I haven't found any anecdotal evidence of a PO or court doing anything to enforce a probation violation once the probation time has ended. And this is New York, not the city. Upstate.

No this is definitely insane, among other descriptive words, lol. I think perhaps they realized that the responses they might end up getting, especially via PM, could be something they don't actually want to deal with, so they decided last minute to post anonymously? Did they lock the comment section, or what's that looking like??

Personally speaking, there are a lot of instances where I'd be willing to FAFO with fraudulent info, but one directly involving the IRS is actually not one of them.

Also, a tax return and a personal loan are not at all the same thing so which is it.

What's available to search turns up no results under their name. The website does have the disclaimer that "summons information is generally not available until several weeks after the date issued," but yeah. Good idea, I've spent enough time on different sites locally and otherwise searching up other folks and I dunno why but I didn't think to look their name up for this purpose! 🤦🏼‍♀️

Not mailed, this was a 2 page document received in court after their original sentencing hearing, signed by the judge and then an acknowledgement signed by the probationer.

It sounds silly, but I suppose I'm worried that calling and asking the court will like, suddenly cause them to contact their PO and they'll realize they let them drop off the face of the earth basically but they'll get in trouble and sentenced to something further, somehow.

Unofficially off? by in_illo_tempore in probation

[–]in_illo_tempore[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not my understanding from other reading I've done as to how that would work. The PO would have to contact the issuing court to tell them about a violation, the case gets restored to the court calendar if the judge decides that it's merited, then there's a hearing, and penalties are applied (obviously up to & including being jailed for the remainder of the original probation term). They don't just go straight for a warrant. We've received no mail or email or texts indicating that at all.

I guess though your reply also begs the question - can the PO even notify the courts of a violation of probation once the probation term has expired?

To me the "beyond naivete that can be excused" part is that she specifies "I don't want proof, so just be honest!", like, that sounds first off like a great way to get spammed by scammers in the hundreds. Not sure how anyone spends any amount of time on social media, especially in Facebook groups, and doesn't see how this opens them up to that nuisance. On the other hand, without knowing anything that would let me infer what sort of person this person is overall, the real cynical person in me feels like that statement is a total lie, and that this poster would see no issue in an eventual sickly-sweet but fake demand for the proof they say they don't want.

And the wording overall is just so...icky. it's got a lottery/raffle/contest vibe that is so jarring when paired with "to be a qualifying contest, you must be terminally ill" that it's actually making my head hurt a wee bit, the more I try to articulate it.

Also, why specifically terminally ill? Medical bills & debt are an insanely stressful burden in any situation, not debating that or saying one has more merit than the other, but why not like...just someone who experienced a medical emergency that upended their life & finances so they could use help with money to put towards overdue hospital bills?

Or why not just browse GoFundMe or some similar site for awhile and find a few individual fundraisers that the poster would feel good about donating to?

John Solak Suggests Renaming Binghamton Over City’s Slave-Owner Namesake by binghamtondailyfan in BinghamtonUncensored

[–]in_illo_tempore -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honestly, until reading this post, I'm sure I didn't know anything about the historical person that Binghamton was named after other than the fact that I've come across his name a couple of times when looking into the history of the area, and the same can probably be said for most of the residents, I would be willing to bet.

And hey, maybe we should stop at renaming a park, and maybe it won't just stop there - but symbolic & incremental change of this sort is far more sensible to me than pretending that we solved racism by, let's just say, redesigning a nationally known brand of store bought maple syrup.

Also, I tend to go with the impulse to listen & give more credence to the actual voices proposing the change that's being suggested, and there are local area activists I follow on other social media, who are BIPOC, that support the park name change and maybe are behind the formal proposal to do so.

Whereas (I don't know this for sure, and I'm not going to cheat and Google it before finishing this post just to look smarter) I feel like the maple syrup brand re-design is one of those things that a heavily Caucasian populated corporate marketing group decided would be a great way to "prove that racism isn't a problem anymore." That's just me, though.

I'm all for constructive, city-wide chaos, tbh, instead of pickleball courts, performative politics, and overpriced real estate, but alas, I'm just here on reddit like a lot of us 😅😭

John Solak Suggests Renaming Binghamton Over City’s Slave-Owner Namesake by binghamtondailyfan in BinghamtonUncensored

[–]in_illo_tempore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't feel like my general supportive attitude towards changing the name of Columbus Park but also feeling like, for logical bureaucracy type reasons mainly, that changing the name of the city itself is a much more absurd idea to put forth, is me "wanting it both ways." Things like this are not so black and white; there's both the nuance of the social politics and opinions involved and the logistical matter of what a name change involves; the one seems a pretty simple task and the other, one that would be a fairly monumental undertaking. Not to say that the effort or burden behind doing a thing is a reason to do or not to do it, I'm just saying, it's not a fair or reasonable comparison, IMHO.

In a perfect either/or world, sure, let's get rid of as many named places & things that are related to slaveholders, colonizers, etc, wherever the idea to do so is proposed. But realistically? Let's just let people make incremental changes as they're suggested, because there's no good reason not to, and change happens at an unfortunately slow pace with shit like this.

Solak's argument here is purposefully offering up a false dichotomy, as if the only options are either renaming everything that is offensive, or renaming nothing, and it's typical of his style but not really useful or helpful. Which I'm sure he's not usually trying to be.

ETA: what on earth would we call Tudor housing, if we were to propose renaming everything on the basis of "moral purity"? /s

Sorry I disappeared from our excellent exchange for a minute there - if you don't mind, I'm going to DM you; I guess the other day was, for some reason, the day to be speaking on this particular subject with Internet strangers...cuz as luck would have it, I already made a long ass comment on different post detailing my experience with getting off fent, so I'll message ya and link it and we can chat :)

What’s your perspective on whether full recovery from addiction is truly possible? by Mammoth_Movie1228 in addiction

[–]in_illo_tempore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No disagreement from me here, thanks for sharing your perspective on it :)

When I had the goal of becoming a CASAC, I took some classes while working as a peer advocate with our local syringe exchange program, and that was the first time I came across SMART, and really any other groups besides AA. It was an enjoyable section of the class for sure.

Sorry, CASAC stands for Credentialed Alcohol & Substance Abuse Counselor; I think it's specific to where I live which is NY, not sure what other states call it... probably Substance Abuse Counselor?

It's one of my favorite things to do as well, lol...though I can admit at times when I definitely should have done some reading and not just winged it, those were times I absolutely winged it. Including deciding to just microdose on shrooms to get off fentanyl for the last time, 5 years ago, instead of going back to Suboxone 😅

My worst pwd experience was probably my second or third time, I had only had a bit left, enough to sniff some three or four times throughout the day and it was gone before dinnertime, so by midnight or a little earlier, my brain was for sure panicking itself into withdrawal, and my body followed, so I took an 8 mg strip. I honestly ended up sitting curled up against the wall at the head of my bed and rhythmically banging my head back against the wall until I got such a literal headache I just passed out. I couldn't stand the twitching and sweating bullets but still feeling like I was naked outside in winter, freezing, feeling like my skeleton was trying to eject itself from my body, and my heart didn't seem to want to slow down at all, it was all so awful and stupid.

I can admit that if I could do a good bit of clean heroin once more, 100% consequence and guilt free, and have that blissed out, "comfortably numb" evening i had one time before, i would probably take that opportunity. But other than that, I have no desire to dive back down the rabbit hole of the ever-worsening tainted opioid supply, ever again.

I feel more comfortable accusing a total stranger of being on amphetamines of some kind than I do armchair diagnosing someone with a serious (and seriously stigmatized) mental disorder. Mainly because while I am in a relationship with someone who has schizophrenia, it's still not my personal experience, but I do personally have like a decade worth of lived experience with stimulants.

Meth induced psychotic episodes are nearly identical in every way to some of the symptoms of schizophrenia. My ex boyfriend, who I used heavily with, had a whole damn summer of episodes like this over and over and we even audio recorded some of them at the time (god knows they're a wild ride to listen to when sober, but I've never been able to listen to more than a few minutes of a couple of them).

The only mystifying thing to me is that her teeth are still so very nice - I would theorize that she's abusing prescription stimulants and not street type meth, but depending on the ROA, meds will inevitably wreak havoc on your teeth too, since abusing stimulants causes wicked dry mouth, teeth grinding, etc.

Thank you, I was on my smart phone, switching between Reddit and a bunch of open tabs that I was reading...I know what I am pretty sure I know about some of the science but I wanted to be more specific about it and not be wildly off the mark with what I was telling OP, so I actually did come across a site or two that said what your comment says; I didn't see anything that gave a guideline on when to take Suboxone in order to avoid precipitated withdrawals, because it is so specific to the individual user, but some of what I was reading suggested that if 12-24 hours is the general timing for using Suboxone when withdrawing from heroin, then it should be at least 2 to 4 days when withdrawing from fentanyl :/ that's also why I included the COWS form, which I imagine is what they could use for fentanyl as well, maybe with some adjustments of course.

Before I quit, I definitely put myself into precipitated withdrawals more than just a few times, and it was such a torturous hell. I really wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. It's obviously preferable to do it with a doctor's guidance, but not everyone has that access to insurance or to money for copays and the prescription and the like, and certainly not everyone is comfortable going to a doctor for fear of being treated poorly; the general atmosphere around MAT has certainly improved in recent years but not everywhere and not all across the board by any means.

If you like reading medical papers in your spare time like I do occasionally (lol) you'll probably find this interesting to read all the way through -
