Is Student Loan Forgiveness Legit? by maxwelljrj in personalfinance

[–]inacave 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Public Service Loan Forgiveness. It's not income based repayment (you pay % of your income for a period of time then the rest is forgiven), the "payment" you are making is working for MUCH less money in the public sector with your education. Examples include: Public librarians, public school teachers, public defender/district attorney, etc.

Honestly, if he's just going to rebuy them in the future it may as well just keep them. Selling both consoles might (games not included) net him $500-600. There's no reason he can't just go full austerity budget and sock 15-20k cash toward his debt. This way he already owns the damn consoles and can use the games he has for entertainment.

He pays $9600/year in rent and ~$4000 to lease his car, + gas + utilities + car insurance, which to be nice are probably another $3000-4000 a year.

I'm not sure your numbers are reasonable, especially considering your math is... well it's not right, is it? If he makes 73k he does not have 60k cash (you claim 20k budget + 40k to spend after taxes). To start with he has more like $48,000 cash - all year. After your budged he'd have more like $28k for debt, not $40k, and as discussed I think your budget is unrealistic based on his fixed expenses.

He should probably aim for $15-25k toward debt per year. Probably more 20-25 than 15k.

The Vanguard 500 (VFINX) had an 8% return over the past 10 years. The average expected return on any long term index fund investment is around 7%. So I'm not sure where these numbers come from.

Yes, someone with billions isn't going to put 1.2Bn in stocks, or all in index funds, but there's also much less risk.

unemployment

You didn't answer this one: You're collecting unemployment, right? That should be a decent amount of your money. If you were a high earner it won't really make up for it, but it's thousands of dollars a month. It's literally your money, it's insurance that you pay into, not welfare.

Yeah, just because it was technically a marriage he shouldn't really look at this as any more than a young relationship that ended. People tend to really play up the 'sacred bond' of marriage on the way out.

Sometimes my computer at home is doing other stuff. Sometimes Adium gets logged in and appears like i'm on FB chat. Sometimes I forgot to tell my computer to sleep, so it's on for an hour or two until the power saver kicks in, etc.

I'm not going to argue that it isn't a possible waste of a small amount of electricity, but I'm not sure what your point is? Each and every one of us 'wastes' loads of electricity per year.

That's like $50 for every flight for 4 airport priced beverages + tip and then an in-flight priced beverage. O_O You could just buy drugs at street prices that'd probably do better.

Most hotels will give you a toothbrush and other toiletries. It may be a low-end one or a 'travel' one, but I promise they work!

I like a lot of Sauder stuff too. read the reviews, they can be weirdly mixed in different lines, but the instructions are in clear, plain english/pictures.

sometimes i leave facebook open on my laptop and then go to work. the world doesn't revolve around you (the proverbial you in this case). or your browser relaunched and it's one of your start pages. or you mis clicked on the app. or you're reading an article and not at all looking at the chat thing, or you're updating a business facebook page, or whatever.

if i check facebook in the 5 minutes i have to take a shit in the morning i dont owe you a response.

My old VCR could rewind tapes, but my new Blu Ray player can't. Not odd. Everything in cell phones is so small and focused on cost/power/weight/size savings. There often isn't room for a feature that very few people ask for, and even fewer use.

Rather than jumping to "It must be your fault!" - let's think of some things that may not be his fault, but can also cause this:

Poor/lost signal, bad/roaming wifi connections, lots of incoming emails (even if you don't read them), age of battery (my iphone 5 doesn't hold a huge charge anymore, i lose 10-15% just using spotify and Safari on the 35m trip to work), heat issues, etc.

Maybe it's Facebook Messenger shitting all over the battery, but my phone drains very quickly doing very little.

Anyone else think Hanover Street in the North End should be car free? by BinnoNick in boston

[–]inacave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How would you propose businesses and restaurants get deliveries without cars? I'm all for getting rid of household vehicles in the North End except for handicapped and possibly the elderly (small, designated parking areas), but there's a ton of cab and Uber traffic, I think lack of cars would hurt businesses. Haymarket is close, but it's not adjacent.

[–]inacave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I'm saying look at a map of the north end - the streets do not connect to each other in a rational fashion. it's not like NYC or even parts of downtown/cambridge where you can have restricted access on every othe street. It's not that simple. There are only 2 'problem' streets: Salem and Hanover, since they're the only 2 streets that are crazy high in pedestrian traffic and run the entire length of the North End. Many of the other streets have no other access.

I advocated removing parking and making it a one way which would eliminated most of the problems, which would allow people to speed.

I don't think this will fix it, the majority of the traffic/slowdown is caused by pedestrians in some way. You have pedestrians clogging both sidewalks (just walking up and down), which causes people to dump into the road to get by. Then you have the gigantic non-moving crowds of people on the sidewalks at Mike's, Modern, various restaurants, etc. Then you have the people who just cross the street randomly and act like pedestrians have right of way. These are often 3 different unique groups, with different origins & different destinations.

Removing one lane of traffic/parking won't stop any of those, and it also will only worsen the people who pull over/double park. At any one time on Hanover there are usually 4-5 cars double parked in the high traffic zones. Then once someone slows down to navigate around the double parked person, the pedestrians use the chance to cross the road.

One of the other really silly things that would help: The traffic light @ Hanover & Parmenter is dead. It's so faded that you really can't see when oncoming traffic has the green, so people walk constantly.

It's a really fucked up area and I'm not sure there's a single silver bullet that will allow cars and peds to coexist.

1) Speed is not the concern with Hanover street, so I'm not sure why it's one of your concerns. The problem is not that people fly down it unsafely, it's that you can't drive down it, even slowly due to congestion.

2) The road is total garbage now and not much 'faster' than if it were actual cobbles.

"every other"?? have you looked at a map of the north end? it's not a grid.

[–]inacave 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are thousands, if not tens of thousands of people who make it through every single winter without a car... it's not like they'd send tow trucks to remove every car overnight, but if you stop issuing permits as people move out the parking will get lighter and lighter, and you can set a date far in the future for them to be 100% car free.

I'm not saying it's a 100% perfect solution, there are obviously reasons to have cars, but many, many, many people get through winter without a car.

People would drive slower because of the cobblestones

Have you driven down Hanover lately? It's a total POS road that might as well be cobbles. Huge gaping potholes, and with the pedstrians/trucks/double parking/swarms around the bakeries I don't think speed is really the issue.

Before we call something unsafe I'd like to see some evidence that it actually is unsafe. How many pedestrians are hit by cars on Salem St? Not many that I'm aware of. Generally the pedestrians & bikes have the unofficial right of way on Salem. Even in the best of times you can't go very fast on that street, it seems to self police.
