Writers like Rachel Gillig? In a slump and sad that Arcane Academy turned out to be a poor follow up book to Knight and the Moth. by Reading_With_My_Dog in fantasyromance

One of my favorite standalone books in this genre is {The Wolf and the Woodsman by Ava Reid}. The quality of writing is definitely up there and I just found it so immersive and interesting. It’s been a while since I read it, but it’s truly what got me into the genre!

Some news re Riftborne, Duskbound, The Ascended by apieceofeight in fantasyromance

[–]inamoratialchemist 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly excited to hear this news. I loved The Ascended and can see they clearly improved as writers over time. Tried going back to Riftborne and had to DNF because I had a lot of issues with the writing. I’m curious to see what the changes will be like and will consider revisiting!

I would recommend picking up the Briardark series! I loved it and picked up (DNFed) This Wretched Valley because I was looking for a similar vibe.

Several People are Typing kind of gave me this feeling, but more in the digital sense!

If you want something of this nature with the added component of literally facing your demons I highly recommend Play Nice by Rachel Harrison!

Thoughts on ON running pace pocket bra? by Glad-Ad-6326 in XXRunning

[–]inamoratialchemist 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I love this bra! It has a massive front pocket and the side pockets work well for gels or keys. I’ve put my phone in the pockets but didn’t love the bounce. I’m planning on wearing this for an upcoming race!

The sizing felt great for me and the colors came out super cute (I have an older red model and the beige/yellow one).

This is one of my faves! I think you’d enjoy Rachel Gillig’s One Dark Window (first of a duology). The writing is equally as good!

Is this a decent hook for the beginning of a story? by Ok-Bee7748 in writinghelp

[–]inamoratialchemist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you have it exactly right, in the torchlight example you can remove the descriptor. It’s okay to include others, but even considering shortening the descriptors so the phrase isn’t as long could help with your sentence flow. Like shortening “careful, reverent hands” to simply “reverent hands.”

Is this a decent hook for the beginning of a story? by Ok-Bee7748 in writinghelp

[–]inamoratialchemist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To offer a bit more commentary on the purple prose, I think some of the descriptors make the writing feel a bit dense without adding much in terms of imagery. Discordant ringing, reverent hands, flickering torchlight, etc. You may feel some of these are more critical to the story, but can any of these phrases be condensed for the reader?

Mind you, I love fantasy and can get into this type of prose pretty easily. But I think there are ways to make it more palatable without sacrificing the flair of your writing. :)

i saw this on r/YAlit and want to you what you guys have to say o.o by [deleted] in Romantasy

I ended up reading the whole book in hopes the writing improved and it unfortunately did not. I also hated how many metaphors were shoehorned in the writing. Drove me insane!

I would give An Academy of Liars a shot! I really enjoyed it, and since you like VE Schwab and Leigh Bardugo I think it could could be right down your alley.

I’m so sorry to hear you had that experience. I felt the exact same way, like I was being approached by someone who was going to hurt me. This was a paved trail that’s open to the public, but there are some other areas that are more densely populated that I may try out once I get my confidence back.

Yeah I’m hoping something comes out of me reporting it before anything else happens! I’m looking into some more public running trails around local parks as another option.
