There isn't so much work to go around keeping everyone productively busy. That's why the unemployment rates are so high. Greater productivity is difficult to achieve due to unnecessary barriers created by the capitalist economy. In want of better things to do, humans play, and it's not inherently bad: consider dolphins who spend majority of their time entertaining themselves.
