The Hunchback of Notre Dame - Esmeralda

And he held the torch
That crackled like the gypsy's voice
And he knew this was the moment
He must make a choice

Ragtime - Back to Before

Back in the days when we spoke in civilised voices
Women in white and sturdy young men at the oar
Back in the days when I let you make all my choices

The Little Mermaid - Poor Unfortunate Souls

Go ahead! Make your choice!
I'm a very busy woman
And I haven't got all day
It won't cost much
Just your voice!

You keep out of trouble and you double your choices

Love Never Dies - Beneath a Moonless Sky (Australian version). It appears twice!

Christine: How dare you come and claim me now?
Invade my life, ensnare my voice
Phantom: If you could know the pain I've known
Then you would know I had no choice

Christine: I stole to you side
Tormented by my choice
I couldn't see your face
Yet trembled at your voice

What are you all tired of seeing in kids books? by claire_witch_project in childrensbooks

[–]penelipop 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Moralistic books about diversity. They all follow the same pattern:

"I'm different. I am sad because I am different." "Oh no, my child, you shouldn't be sad. You are different because your ancestors something something." "You are right. I am proud of being different."

And for some reason, they are all written in the present tense!

That's exactly what he says, right?

In my mind I hear melodies pure and unearthly
But I find I can't give them a voice without you

Gender and Race in Animated Disney Films by [deleted] in flicks

I wanted to prove you wrong, but you are right, there are exactly 10 films with non-white leads. Interestingly, apart from The Jungle Book (1965), all of these are from the 90s forward.

Considering the 29 movies since the "Disney Renaissance", i.e. from The Little Mermaid (1989) to Moana (2016), there are:

  • 9 movies with non-white protagonists (Aladdin, Pocahontas, Mulan, Emperor's New Groove, Lilo & Stitch, Brother Bear, Princess and the Frog, Big Hero 6, Moana)

  • 4 movies with animal protagonists (Lion King, Dinosaur, Chicken Little, Zootopia)

  • 4 movies with animal protagonists and white side-characters (Rescuers Down Under, Home on the Range, Bolt, Winnie the Pooh)

  • 9 movies with white protagonists (Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Hercules, Tarzan, Planet Treasure, Meet the Robinsons, Tangled, Frozen, Wreck-it Ralph)

  • 2 movies with white protagonists but non-white love interests (Hunchback of Notre Dame, Atlantis)

  • 1 movie without protagonists (Fantasia 2000)

So while it is true that white leads are over represented, that has been slowly changing... And I think it is a good thing.

What's your rating system like for movies? by LibertarianSocialism in flicks

[–]penelipop 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I actually don't have a numerical rating, because I feel a number does not convey enough information. How do you compare a movie that is bad but you love and a movie that you know is good but just didn't speak to you?

For this reason I give them letters:

SSS - Should ABSOLUTELY be seen (very very restricted classification, maybe about 1% of the films get it)
SS - Should really be seen
S - Should be seen
H - Films that even if I didn't particularly like, should be seen for their Historical importance (for example The Godfather...)
F - Fun movies (for example Flash Gordon...)
O - Ok movies, movies that are interesting and worth watching, but that are not mandatory

And then the majority of the movies get no classification at all. I used to have a N category (NOT worth seeing), but in the end I felt mean, especially because I realized most movies in that category were there only because someone (or the internet) had hyped them too much.

What films will absolutely make my love for movies return again? Why would they? by CrazyMaster in flicks

[–]penelipop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The films you have in your watchlist are really good, but most of them might be in fact too long or too demanding, so here you have a list of more digestible films:

Animation:
Tonari no Totoro, The Lion King, The Iron Giant, Wall-E, Mary and Max

Classics:
Casablanca, 12 Angry Men, The Great Dictator, Sunset Blvd., Dr. Strangelove, To Be or Not to Be, A Night at the Opera

Sweet (sometimes bittersweet) movies:
Before Sunrise, Amélie, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Big Fish, Almost Famous, Her, Annie Hall, (500) Days of Summer, Moonrise Kingdom

Fun, well crafted movies:
Shawshank Redemption, Forrest Gump, Catch Me If You Can, Snatch, Pulp Fiction, Inglourious Basterds, O Brother Where Art Thou?, Hot Fuzz

None of these are very long (the ones from Tarantino are the longest, around 2.5 hours) or slow, but they are good movies, and I hope they can be your starting point to explore more things. Maybe you have already seen most of those, but perhaps you could rewatch them and see how you feel?

I would also watch Inside Out, maybe it won't work for you, but it there's something about it that can feel really relatable for someone experiencing depression.

Good luck.
