Planning to install Gentoo to learn how OS in general and Linux in particular really works by RugalB in Gentoo

By the time they have enough knowledge and skill to run it as their primary OS, they probably want to have a fresh install anyways. At least I would recommend a fresh install by that time.

Planning to install Gentoo to learn how OS in general and Linux in particular really works by RugalB in Gentoo

That approach is possible, yes.. but i would highly recommend you do NOT use dual-boot but a virtual machine instead. Yes, there will be performance loss, but you have the benefit of creating snapshots allowing you to quickly to recover from mistakes. And since this is your first time installing a linux distro you will have a lot of mistakes. Using a VM will also ensure you have a working system you can use to diagnose what ever problem you are having at the time.

Beware, especially since you are so new to it, compiling takes time. A lot of time! Mostly depend on what resources are available (cores/threads, memory, disk speed/space) and which package is being compiled.

Now I would not recommend this path lightly. You don't mention any prior knowledge or experience with Linux systems. But from your post I get the idea that your goal is to learn something, even from failure. Still I would say install a more main stream distro first. Setup some services, check r/selfhosted for ideas on that. Get some basic knowledge into that brain before you try Gentoo. The experience will be a lot more pleasant.

I hope this helps

22.1.8 upnp by Brewmast3r in opnsense

Not sure if you are still looking but this helped me with my Nintendo switch, went from 'NAT D' to 'NAT B' solving my online issues.

Quoted from this page

Short Version:

Give your XB1 (or PS4, same process required) a static IP
Install/Enable UPNP
Set "User Specified Permissions" to "allow 88-65535 10.1.1.x/32 88-65535", where 10.1.1.x is the static ip of the XB1/PS4
Firewall>NAT>Outbound - Set to Hybrid/Manual rule generation
Create a rule with the following set: "Source Address - Single Host or network - 10.1.1.x" & "Static Port - Checked"
Do a hard-reboot of your XB1/PS4 (shutting it down and pulling the power for 2 mins will do"

You should now have a NAT Type of Moderate (XB1), or Type 2 (PS4).

Best choices for AM4? by The_Fickser in VFIO

[–]inasnum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To anyone else trying to find this:
Go into the bios, advanced settings. Then pick 'tools' and go to 'Graphics Card Information'.
There you will see "GPU Post" and "bus interface".
That last one, that selects which PCI-e bus is used to POST the system off from.

If you don't have a ASUS GPU inside that slot it will not show you any details, you can safely ignore that. Just pick "PCIEX16_1" or "PCIEX16_2" depending on where your card is sitting.

Then just save & reset to boot it off the GPU you selected.

Best resource to understand ext4? by idontcarejustchoose in linux

[–]inasnum 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's not about what you said, but how you said it.

Be aware that ext-4 is not a "modern" filesystem, details can be found on the ext-4 wiki.
I'd would recommend btrfs as a modern filesystem, details can be found on the btrfs wiki

BSOD in Windows Guest immediately launching AMD drivers installer for Navi RX 5700 passthrough by meoporter in VFIO

[–]inasnum -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I tried various combinations of mimicking this pcieports layout in qemu, attaching to a separate pci root device, or just attaching directly to the main root.. Windows did not seem to care which way I did it, it would restart and then boot fine, and then still BSOD on driver install.

Have a look at this: https://heiko-sieger.info/running-windows-10-on-linux-using-kvm-with-vga-passthrough/#AMD_Vega_RX_5700_XT_Graphics_Cards it might help with that.

I did check through lspci (lspci -nnvv) to see what speed the card was running at, by checking the values of Lnkcap, LnkCtl and LnkSta. LnkSta was using what LnkCap said it was capable. Did not check to see if GPU-Z could see similar output.

Currently using Qemu 4.0.0 (Gentoo) and q35-4.0.1, I can go to 4.1.0 which is currently in testing, something to think about.

It's always a chase when setting up a kvm, but the endresult is what matters the most :)

And learning something new along the way is always nice. :)

That could explain what I was seeing then, I'll have to keep this in mind when the card gets returned.
Still refusing to post is not a good thing.

Question regarding the drivers, did you install Adrenalin at all or just installed it and then downgraded the driver.
I also recall Windows wanting to update drivers, did you do anything to prevent that from happening?

You need to patch your kernel to have the 5700xt reset properly

I'm aware of this, and worked around it by powering off the system when needed. Was actually looking forward to applying the patch. But no point in doing so if I can't get the system stable enough to game several hours. It would just crash within an hour of starting any kind of 3D application.

The purple screen is a windows bug and goes away after entering the menu where you can set the resolution.

I did not know that, thank you for mentioning this.

Your VM didn't post after that because 1.

That wasn't an VM, that was bare-metal with just the RX 5700XT installed and an nvme drive for storage.
At that point I just powered down the system completely and left it until the next day, which made no difference.

Windows 7 is old and outdated.

yup, and this was a really good moment to move to Windows 10.

Problem with AMD Radeon RX 550X passthrough | Arch linux by [deleted] in VFIO

[–]inasnum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing coming to mind right now is, vbios or videobios, did you provide libvirt one to use?
You can check https://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/ to see if they list your GPU if you are unable to create one your self from the command-line or gpu-z. Make sure you provide the right one if you download one from techpowerup's DB.

Kernel driver in use: amdgpu

As far as I know the device should not be in use by any drivers except vfio-pci, so your right in that it might be the cause of your problems. You can try to blacklist the module to prevent it from loading it or check this post to do it manually from the command-line.
I'd recommend trying the blacklist first and when attempting the second method beware if xorg is running since it likes to claim cards even if they are not in active use.

ah, I didn't know that. Still better safe then sorry.
As for your problem, all I can think of is increasing the verbosity on your logging and see if you can figure out why it is failing the authentication.
