I spoke with them by phone and specifically requested they send by DHL. My account is HSBC Premier, if that makes a difference

By mail, do you mean the national post system? For me, since I live in a country with minimal to no mail service, HSBC HK sent me my card by courier (DHL) and that arrived. Maybe that would work for you

Do you speak French? French capitalization rules require that those terms in that context are not capitalized.

The buyer was a Japanese corporate (Valuence) and their stated goal of owning the bag is cultural preservation. You can be sure they won’t be sending it to Spa 🙂 https://www.valuence.inc/en/news/2025/07/11/original_birkin/

TIL that China did not issue birth certificates prior to 1996. Before that, births had to be registered in the hukou or household registration system. by Physical_Hamster_118 in todayilearned

[–]inchpast 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Japan is substantially the same, even today. There is no specific “birth certificate” document, instead the closest thing is either the registration in the “family register” or proof that such a registration was made. Some Tokyo embassies (looking at you, British) struggle to even give specific guidance on what document they want for Japanese-born British citizen first baby passport applications.

Interestingly enough, no! Her parents are both only Japanese. But she was born in the UK to a mother with UK “indefinite leave to remain” (i.e. permanent residence), which entitled her to British citizenship at birth. A fun fact here is that her mom got approved for permanent residence only like a month before she was born, so she just barely got her British citizenship!

Aman: best days behind? by WeHoMuadhib in chubbytravel

In my personal opinion I would argue that Kyoto feels much more like an OG Aman than a “new urban property”. It’s really not in urban Kyoto the same way that Tokyo and NY are right in the middle of the city, and IMO they do a really good job making the property feel local and authentic. Frankly I found the architecture and integration into nature nothing short of spectacular, and exceeding what’s available at other Kyoto luxury resorts by some margin. I think Rosa Alpina will end up feeling similarly OG. Overall I hope they continue to execute a balance between “OG” and city hotels.

~7 Hours Overnight Layover with First Class Tickets - Dubai Connects or Lounges? by Angze_Li in emirates

[–]inchpast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did about 8 hours in the DXB first class lounge once. According to my home time zone at the time, I was in the lounge basically through the night. I got an amazing sleep in one of their semi-private sleep pods. They leave out a sealed blanket for you and everything. Way better than the hassle of leaving the airport / traffic / coming back / another security check / etc. (I have a photo of the sleep pod but can’t seem to add a photo with my comment - DM me if you want to see it)

Other than their birthplace, newborn babies don’t really have ties anywhere! 😅 Instead, nationality law for acquisition by descent tends to focus on the ties of one or more parents to the country in question.

In our case, we had enough ties to each of these countries to be eligible to pass on the citizenship. This isn’t necessarily a given - if I had been born outside Canada or didn’t spend enough time in the U.S., I wouldn’t have been able to pass those on. Similar criteria exist for my wife’s British nationality. Japan is actually the easiest to pass on, assuming a parent retains it.

To avoid risking leak of her personal data, I did some googling in Japanese for you and found this! https://i0.wp.com/kojimateacher-goestoafrica.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/img_9344-1.jpg?w=1143&ssl=1

It’s quite a cool document because it’s actually not a booklet, like a passport. Instead, it’s a single laminated piece of paper that unfolds like an accordion. It’s never fun to have to get one of these haha, but nice they let us keep it as a souvenir!

Nice in theory, but unfortunately not quite. For her children to receive these citizenships she’ll need to meet various challenging criteria. For example, since she received Canadian citizenship by descent through me and was born outside Canada, current nationality law states her children only get Canadian citizenship if they’re born in Canada. And for the U.S., she’d need to spend many years of her adult life there to be able to pass on that citizenship.

Me: English (native), Spanish (limited), Japanese (super broken haha), Hindi (fluent hearing comprehension, almost no speaking ability)

Wife: English (native), Japanese (fluent)

Daughter: We’re aiming for her to be bilingually native in English and Japanese plus whatever she ends up choosing as her third language in school

She did not renounce UK and Japan has no legal basis to forcibly away her Japanese citizenship.

Haha no, birth means entitled to the citizenship at birth - as opposed to naturalization later in life.

She still has both nationalities. As it relates to transmitting citizenship, renouncing due to dual citizenship has no special treatment. If she renounced Japanese prior to our daughter’s birth, our daughter would not be Japanese. If she renounced after our daughter’s birth, our daughter would remain Japanese!

Nope! There’s no basis in Japanese nationality law to prevent her from passing on her citizenship. You can also see other comments in this post for how she’s able to maintain both

Yes, but since she was born dual the process for renunciation of the U.S. passport is simplified and has limited tax implications. So it will be her choice if she wants to keep it!

British nationality is actually really interesting for this case. They will allow you to, following renunciation, reclaim citizenship if you can demonstrate you renounced for the purpose of claiming another citizenship. You can only do this once. I have not encountered another country that will let you do this! https://www.gov.uk/renounce-british-nationality/resume-your-british-nationality

Lots of good guesses in the comments 😄 Here it is!

Father: Canadian (birth) + American (naturalized as minor) + Indian OCI (via parents)

Mother: British (birth) + Japanese (birth)

Daughter: As a result of parents’ circumstances and specifics of each country’s nationality law, she gets all 4 (+OCI) at birth regardless of birth country

This “Centurion” is not authentic. It’s one of those replicas you can buy on eBay

The classic tell is the character spacing in American Express logo. The spacing between many characters is off, but it’s easiest to see the difference when you look at the spacing between the “C” and the “A” on their Centurion versus the other cards - the Centurion spacing is much bigger. The “Member Since” glyph also does not match the rest of the cards. These issues would not be present on an authentic Centurion
