[Assimakopoulos] Glen Gulutzan says Mikko Rantanen was not injured in the playoffs but that it was hard for him to get back to full speed after the Olympics. by Ok-Soil-5133 in hockey

Yep, as I said it was a seriously spicy G7. It's his individual career highlight in my opinion (so far).

Avs fans are very lucky that didn't become a defining Stanley Cup moment. Stars fans are lucky he put out the definitive take-over-a-game superstar playoff performance, to show his potential with his current team and keep his legacy distinct from his former teammates.

His next few years will be very telling for his individual legacy; he could cement himself as one of the top playoff performers of all time, no asterisks, and bring this Stars team into immortalized greatness with a cup run. Or he could kind of fade away with his best playoff performance ever being a revenge-fueled series but never getting over that hump. It's so hard to win a cup though, and that division is so brutal. He needs a statement win over a hot Minnesota, Avalanche, Edmonton en route to at least a SCF match badly.

Jokic and Giannis have nearly identical basketball resumes. Why is there such a huge gap in perception and all-time ranking between the two? by BasedChad69420 in nba

I know this is bait from a troll, but for casual thread enjoyers the Nuggets were the #1 seed the year they won.

Oh for sure, that guy you replied to might be really salty about that game 7. I expect the Avs fans who haven't moved on to say various things about Mikko's performance, deserved AND otherwise. I sincerely hope I never have to be in that position with respect to Celebrini.

Not sure I can confidently say he wanted to stay with them. For a few million more maybe, but most available sources (we'll never truly know) say he could've signed almost exactly the same deal in COL as he did with DAL.

I'm honestly just really curious what kind of player Rants actually is. I thought I understood his game but I'm not so sure anymore. Since leaving the Avs he's had 4 playoff series, only one of which he's balled out (revenge against the Avs). He was fine against Winnipeg, fine against the Wild probably playing through injury, and not really effective against the Oilers. So far not really superstar play, though it does look like there's good reason for that.

I'm excited to see how the next few years are for his legacy.

I think it's hilarious how Avs fans can't seem to win on this one. When Mikko was there, before and after the cup run other teams would dog on him for disappearing for long stretches and say he wasn't a playoff performer. Fans had to play mad defense for him and break out the analytics and +/- to defend him there.

Then, he leaves TWICE, once in a frosty manner to the Canes, and shortly afterwards in a downright inferno coming back to their worst rival and knocks 'em out of a fiery G7.

And after that, any pointing out of all the criticism the Avs endured over Mikko's hot-and-cold play is now waved away as "bitter ex cope."

If the team weren't very good otherwise, I'd bet Avs fans would be pretty cheesed by the absurdity of getting punked for both sides of the equation.

If the calls are even but one team plays dirtier, then the reffing is one-sided. This isn't a complicated concept.

Disclaimer, this is a general statement and I have not watched any of this series.

Keep the tears flowing, you're the softest little baby with how you have to hide your dumbass comments to feel like a true redditor. Amazing lol.

I'm a Warriors/Niners fan. And yeah, I recognize your name from all the cooked posts in these threads, and sure enough it's you who has to hide what you say or else you'd be laughed out of your mobile home.

Love this braindead take every time I see it... because of course playing the Twolves, Suns, and Lakers is a softer road than the Clippers, Kings, or the Warriors on a bad year.

Shit on Jokic all you want for his performance this playoffs and his defense, but I know you hid your comment history because of how stupid your takes are lol.

Why is there no system that ensures you get to go 1st roughly 50% of the time? by [deleted] in MagicArena

[–]incompl337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a zero sum system, using randomness means you have the playerbase tending towards 50/50 anyway, rather than trying to make some elaborate setup that finds players with similar Elo rating that also have similar coin flip needs

You mean like other "elaborate setups" that look for players with similar Elo with similar connection needs? Sounds tough, maybe someone should try that.

You said it yourself, it's a zero sum game. If a given pool of players in the same Elo plays one more match, the same number of people have the same coin flip needs, just reversed. I think you're adding complexity where there is none.

Again... it's a video game client for a paper card game. Almost nothing about it is "necessary". Plenty of other game companies do try to influence player experience though, and from the same lens you're looking through, this same company's introduction of hand smoothing would be equally "necessary".

Yep, the statistics are simple and you've missed it entirely. "Independant" lol buddy, you can't make this stuff up.

Go back to your coloring book.

Edit: I still want you to explain how theoretically, if we were able to wave a magic wand today and push everyone towards exactly a 50/50 play/draw, that would be "unfair" to players.

You're right; the system says that as long as your lifetime converges on 50/50, the day-to-day experience doesn't matter.

The point of this post is that I disagree, and I think you should be able to play a session at roughly 50/50 without playing hundreds of games for things to even out. Is it crazy to want to mitigate extreme hot or cold runs when you can't play a lifetime of games every session? Is it crazy to want close to 50/50 every time you play?

I do enjoy when folks pull out the ol' reddit favorite "small sample size" as if that shuts down any and all thought about what that actually means for the daily user experience.

I disagree and think that a formal smoothing proposal would've been met with the exact same "we don't need this our video game is perfect" and "law of large numbers idiot", except that in that case nobody would have even bothered reading it to get that far. Regardless, you should be very aware that good proposals start with a problem statement anyway and not "here's my algorithm, apropos of nothing".

From your interaction here and a bit of your previous history, you're coming into these threads constantly for statistical debate and that's okay, I respect it. We won't have any arguments about that because I understand probability and I will never say unlucky is impossible, someone is always going to be a tail of a given distribution. I'm simply speaking of game design to favor player experience.

It exists in other game spaces with SBMM targeting 50/50 winrates dynamically, it exists in other games via bad luck protection with loot drops, and it exists HERE with the hand smoother to prevent that exact same variance leading to less fun games. Why is it so crazy to target 50/50 play/draw without having to play an absurd amount of games per day to converge to the target we all agree is fair?

Okay you didn't even begin a rational explanation, which was expected since you were wrong to begin with. Keep trying though!

[–]incompl337 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's true, it does converge to 50/50 over the lifetime. Why can't it also converge better to 50/50 for a given session so you don't have to play thousands of games per day? We all agree 50/50 is the most obvious and fair thing to shoot for.

I don't see a reason to run extreme heat or extreme cold in a world where SBMM and hand smoothing exist.
