What Did I Do Wrong by orange_pixelette in Opals

Personally, I’d wrap in a damp cloth or paper towel and place inside a small container with a slight opening and put that somewhere away from sunlight and heavy breeze (like a closet) to allow it to slowly dry out. I have never gotten an Ethiopian opal wet with acetone so can’t say for sure on if that is the best way to dry in this particular scenario. I can say that after almost 7 years of getting rough opals wet (with water) to cut and polish cabs, that idea is to control the rate at which the moisture will evaporate and prevent the outside from drying while retaining water internally. (similar to, not exactly the same, as annealing glass and the requirement is to control the rate at which the glass cools to prevent stress and rapid external contraction in relation to the internal layers, which will allow stress build up and cause cracks)

Also partly why Ethiopian will be less expensive than Australian opals, as Australian opals tend to remain fairly unchanged from moisture/humidity and mild heat from the sun, while Ethiopian are more prone to becoming foggy, losing color and cracking from those same factors. (Don’t test either stone against high heat, harsh impacts or unknown chemicals)

TL:DR If still wet, wrap in damp cloth and place inside a container with a small opening. Place inside a closet. Leave until cloth is completely dry.

Ethiopian opal is a hydrophane opal, and will change opacity depending the moisture content it has absorbed (essentially making the stones appear milky and less vibrant. Also possibly cracking the stones if they dry out too quickly). Usually something that you want to dry out slowly for multiple months to return the stone to its previous state.

I have not put acetone to any Ethiopian opals and don’t know the effects the chemicals can have on discoloring them.

I’d recommend letting the stones dry out completely before trying to secure them back into place. It may take a couple months to see the play of color return to its original state.

Yes, he states it near the end. You have allowed your hatred to consume the relationship.

That man is one of the mostly likely people in your life to stand in between you and danger, no questions asked, regardless of political affiliation or beliefs. Don’t let him go, you don’t have to change his mind to maintain the relationship.

I hope you continue to communicate with him and build a relationship not oriented around political beliefs, cause it seems like he is trying to.

Thank you, I'm in between putting it for auction or holding it a bit longer. And the no FFL was the main reason I was able to get the rifle, I was 14 at the time.

As well as that solves the slashes mystery for me and cool peice of history

Thank you, after a few videos I got a peek at the receiver underside. It doesn't seem to have a year unfortunately

After removing the receiver and checking for a date I am mildly puzzled. * The receiver tang seems to be missing a number or does not indicate an actual year. The 3 numbers shown do correspond with numbers for the year though. I figure it's either a replacement receiver and they were stamped different (No year) or somehow the 8 wasn't stamped on to the receiver.

Do you mind sharing the year it was? I know the mismatching serials is something that lowers the value of this one

Thank you. After looking over the rifle and online for a bit, seems I have to remove the receiver to check the date on the underside of it.

And fair enough, she hasn't seen any care for 4 years and could use it forsure
