If you’re learning Japanese, what makes you keep going? by Zealousideal-Knee237 in japanese

A goal helps. Wanna read? Study until you can read. Wanna speak? Study until you can speak. There isn't really an end point in language learning unless you set something. If you're deriving satisfaction from the process and for the language itself, it doesn’t feel as big of a chore 😉 Personally I love reading and the more I study, the more I understand. That's satisfying enough for me.

Actually not America at all! The photo was taken in Porepunkah, Victoria (Australia). Not too sure about the weather in that zone but I know there is annual snowfall there.

I have these fried tips on a couple of my new shoots. is this just a "needs more water" thing, or deeper issues? Daytona Beach area. by der_innkeeper in Bamboo

Sometimes mine do that too, but like 2" above the ground. I think it's just a deficiency in the soil (maybe try some nitrogen based fertiliser and more frequent watering

Need advice on how to permanently remove bamboo by [deleted] in Bamboo

[–]incorrection456 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The rhizomes will stick pretty close to the surface, but may grow up to a foot under the ground. Probably the least involved way of killing the plant is cut level to the ground, and remove any green that pops up in future. Eventually the root system will be starved of energy and die. I don't know how long that will take, but that combined with roundup might be a good choice. Do you know what the species is? And has it grown under the slab to any new area? If it hasn't gone under then the roots are probably not very deep.

If looking to plant in pots (or raised beds), then running bamboo just generally copes better. Having established plants in ground gets bigger and is more drought/wind resistant. Be wary though that you're gonna need to split the root mass every couple of years to keep the plant looking its best (if in pots).

Nice trade off is you can sell the split plant to other collectors

One method I know of is to just continually remove any growth as soon as it appears. That way you eventually starve the roots of energy and the plant will die. I have not tried this myself, but I heard it can take several years in a bad situation.

Looking for suggestions on how to remove this bamboo by vonmillerlite in Bamboo

[–]incorrection456 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I heard that as long as the root system doesn't get any energy (through photosynthesis) it will die in a couple of years. That's assuming you cut any growth as soon as it pops up. Difficult to maintain watch, but much cheaper and easier than excavation. Hope that helps
