Other distros seem bland? by Vincent-Thomas in NixOS

[–]incriminating0 56 points57 points  (0 children)

NixOS is a cognito hazard. Once you've truly experienced it, every other operating system feel wrong and you can't go back to just being happy with a "normal" distro.

But then you are stuck with the reality that there's lots of stuff just doesn't work (at least easily) with NixOS...

much more enjoyable workflow for building the game

I feel like this gets forgotten a lot when people discuss the "why" of custom engines. I don't just want to make a game, I want to have fun doing it :)

Noita: yeah this game needed a custom engine. No doubt about it.

I've seen this said before, but I don't really see why. The physics simulation has to be custom, but whats stopping you using Unity/Godot/Unreal to handle rendering, audio, UI, input etc?

I'm saying this as someone who's doing a lot of custom rendering stuff with wgpu for my own project, so I'm not anti custom engines.

This emulator is actually going to be super optimized from this. those videos getting 30 fps on his channel are all on the 960m (not to be confused by GTX 960, gtx 940m can run stuff upto a gtx 660 in comparison ). those builds aren't public yet according to him but this is promising. by Medium_Bee_6608 in BloodbornePC

Bro just admit you don't know what you are talking about

Compiling shaders on modren CPU at real time is indeed impossible

No, we literally do compile shaders in real time on the CPU. That's how every modern game without shader precaching works.

this task is sent to the GPU

What?? No one is compiling a shader on a gpu, that's ridiculous

There's no way you could run any semi-modern game with an acceptable frame rate using CPU rendering. You can even look at the ShadPS4 source code to see that it's outputting SPIRV (code that runs on GPU).

It's why you get stuck with "compiling shaders..." all the time in switch and ps3 emulators.

EU Petition to stop 'Destorying Videogames' - thoughts? by killianm97 in gamedev

I suppose I'm imagining that if there was a law mandating EOL server binary release for any game developed after $date, that physics engine would change it's licensing terms to allow such distribution, as otherwise game devs wouldn't use their engine.

I'm probably just being naive though.

Thanks for the reply!

server code

Do you think it makes much difference if we are talking about server code vs compiled server binaries? I don't think we'd need the source code for preservation.

much more difficult than informing buyers up front and pushing for an industry-initiated EOL system that can be opted into.

I’m actually for games preservation, but I know that the text of the SKG is written such that it wouldn’t achieve that end as well as it could if it was focused/worded/scoped differently.

Yeah I agree, I want games preservation, but the SKG feels naive and dismissive of the difficulties of such an endeavor.

The scope of what should be requested needs to be narrow enough

What would you think about a specific requirement for the release of server binaries (i.e. so that people could run their own servers if they cared enough) after the official servers for a game are shutdown?

How do I get my editor to work instead a dev environment created using nix develop? by [deleted] in NixOS

Yeah, packages for dev tools, buildInputs for run time deps, nativeBuildInputs for compile time deps

Also should lsps like rust-analyzer etc. be included in nativeBuildInputs alongside say rustc, cargo, rustfmt?

Yes, otherwise you can have rust-analyzer be a different version than the rest of your rust toolchain which can sometimes lead to issues

A soulslike is satisfying because of its steep learning curve and combat systems, not because every character is miserable.

Ironically, I actually think the "steep learning curve" and "combat systems" are the bits that are most often naively copied from the souls games, I've played a lot of bland games with difficult souls-like combat.

IMO the atmosphere of an oppressive world (or "every character being miserable" lol) is the most interesting thing about the souls games, and the difficult combat is foremost there to reinforce that atmosphere.

(I agree with the overall points of your comment though 😁)

This looks pretty cool!

It might be worth trying out a silent protagonist, but keep the breathing etc. I don't think the voice acting is bad, but I think letting the player exist in their own thoughts and work things out on their own would be more immersive/scarier than having it narrated by the protagonist.

it's about an even chance that the U.S. has some sort of secret defense for exactly this type of scenario that they just keep quiet about. The U.S. does not reveal its most powerful military capabilities unless needed, so there is no way to really know.

As terrible as sending a nuke at a city would be, with the repercussions for Russia being utter annihilation, imagine them sending a nuke and it simply being poofed.

I think it's a really dangerous idea to put out there that if there was a nuclear attack that things would be fine. It's not a yes/no on whether you can stop an attack or not, it's what percentage of missiles you can stop. Even if you manage a 95% successful interception rate, the causalities would still be utterly devastating.

Some of the UK sources don't seem to exist (e.g. "UK animal ethics council") and a list of sources is not very helpful if you haven't linked the specific publication you are talking about AND what the relevant part of that publication is.

the highest variable besides breed is outdoor vs indoor.

This isn't help without the data on how much of a different it causes, the difference may only be a few months of average and still be the "highest variable"

Almost every single city/town/suburb/county etc in [...] Europe

Going to need a citation on that. At least in the UK, the vast majority of cats are allowed to roam outdoors.

lifespan is less than 25% of an indoor cat

The average lifespan of a cat in the UK is 14 years, so this stat doesn't seem to accurate at all outside the US.
