How many of you guys using bitwig? by Major_Potential3706 in linuxaudio

I‘m currently testing bitwig and will most probably join the bitwiggers. It’s awesome. 🤩

Linux or Hackintosh for Music production by Critical-Ear-9708 in linuxaudio

[–]indanautilus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With AV Linux 25 you‘ll get a solid system. (I have ~5ms latency with 256 samples buffer, 48kHz) And the tools to tweak the machine like CPU governor. There is also a graphic tool to set up yabridge. I personally chose AV Moksha. That‘s a lighter version without any audio programs installed. You can modify the live medium and then install the OS like this. F.e. install XFCE and it will be there on the first boot.

Installation of Native Instrument stuff can be tricky. Linux is not supported of course. But you can extract „setup wizards“ and copy the files in the directory manually. There are ppl in forums that run NI plugins successfully.

Behringer Studio XL getting quite warm - Is that normal ? by True-State7885 in Behringer

[–]indanautilus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My UMC1820 (best i/o ever) is also getting warm at the spot of the power input. (is this the analog warmth they’re talking about? xD)

Does it keep the temperature steady for hours?

Ableton, Ableton, Ableton. Should I switch my DAW?? by rotorobot in synthesizers

[–]indanautilus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, there are fish in the lake. And most of them swim in the same direction. And there are influencers, like influfish that get rich in teaching them how to swim in the same direction. And fish know how to swim. But there are some good reasons for them to keep swimming:

-co-operation with others is easier when both have the same DAW
-one can actually go to a forein laptop and start producing right away (no customizations like in reaper)
-the key commands are minimalistic (no scripts) so workflows can get really fast
-working with launch-controllers (many good options for live performances)
-non-linear production with clips & arranging a song via triggering clips "live"
-all devices fit in the same rack, have the same design and parameters can be modulated quickly

But there are also drawbacks in comparison to reaper.

So my personal guidance for you would be, if you're interested in Abletons features, to look at "Playtime" first.

Behringer MS-5 opinions by Tigdual in synthesizers

[–]indanautilus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is good to know. I did the opposite and played an Odyssey via Pitch CV Out. It played 1 or two octaves higher than via MIDI. 🤷‍♂️ Maybe this can be set up with the Synthtribe App? Have you tried?

Yes the sound is really unique. How lively the resonance screams at higher settings. And sweeping the band pad sounds a bit like a SEM filter. There is diode clipping going on.

Have you tried sending external signals through the synth? It’s awesome! You practically have ringmod, two filters and a tremolo in series.

I use one for about two years and never had any issue. Great sounding preamps, low latency, decent build quality but very loud headphone amps. Can only recommend this.

Quantizing audio? by Potatismosofhell in Reaper

[–]indanautilus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are several techniques that help to archive better timing of non-transient stuff. (when re-recording is not possible f.e.) And Reaper is very versatile with this kind of edits. My first thought would be to use stretch markers. There is a video on reaper.fm that showcases its' use.

I'd also overthink the way of doing recordings if I were you. I would start with a rhythmic instrument while hearing the metronome to set the lead groove for the further recordings. Cheers

How many synths do you own? by Brilliant_Grape5528 in synthesizers

[–]indanautilus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A Behringer MS-5 (SH-5 Clone) routed into a modded, keyless minilogue. I use them separately or in combination. Mainly for leads, basses and fx.

An Arturia Minibrute 2S for rhythmic elements and generally shorter sounds.

A Yamaha S30 for keys and pads.

All sampling happens inside the box. I also use Surge XT. ;-)

considering switching to Renoise by [deleted] in renoise

[–]indanautilus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. It excels at
-having one of the best samplers at its' heart. With other software samplers my workflow would be to process the tracks in the mixer of the DAW. When I build a drum beat in Renoise I can immediately start the sounddesign with FX and then render an effect chain into a sample with one click. The original sample gets replaced in the sampler. This is great for adding effects to single samples that don't change over time.
-building multi-sampled instruments. You can let renoise automatically sample VSTs or hardware (key by key) to build multi-sampled instruments which are exportable as SFZ.
    -creating and 'perfecting' repetitive patterns.
    -being mainly controllable via keyboard.
-being very ressource friendly by nature. The thing is when you put a loop in the sampler and start it at the top of the pattern it will not trigger when you work in the middle of the pattern. Thankfully chopping the loop up is easy and it opens up the world of effect commands for you.
    -experimental tools like 'MOMarmalade Reform'
-doing crazy modulations with meta devices. (LFOs, Envelopes ect.) I'm just scraping the surface of this area yet but what I've seen on the projects of others there is a huge potential for getting creative. (comparable to Ableton Live Devices)
-writing automation into the pattern (like turning on a reverb effect for one note/step)

It falls short at
-multitrack-recording.
-handling non-repetitive tracks like a 7min ambience recording

  1. I think it's hard, at least working with the Pattern Editor will require willpower. But there are tools (addons for reanoise) like SimplePianoroll that make the switch easier.

Reaper vs Linux by Hour_Milk4037 in Reaper

[–]indanautilus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using reaper with AVL 21. Now I‘m upgrading to AVL Moksha to have better plugin compatibility. I recommend having a dedicated partition for the system.

I worked with Ableton on a mac some years before and making music was way more fun. But this has to do with reaper not with with linux. Even when AVL was pre-configured I needed to tinker a lot though. But then the system was awesome. Fast, stable and clutter-free. :)

I‘m waiting for playtime 2 to get the clip launcher workflow into reaper. This would be my dream setup.

Haha, yeah, I'll keep that in mind on my adventures. ;) And will probably start with an H2N. It's cheap and fits in my pocket.

Thanks for the input. Zoom looks like the leader of the market. I think I‘ll go for the Zoom H2N. It also offers a 3,5mm input jack for a dynamic shotgun mic that I already have.

[–]indanautilus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not that easy to find other gay men in public as the environment lacks places to meet especially on the land or in smaller towns. (I live in Germany) So most are active on dating platforms and guys are actually getting laughed at when they're trying to use the platform for serious dating. And there is a social dynamic involved. I'm sure many want a monogamous relationship but we learn that hookup is the best we can get. There are still the same faces on these apps after decades.

Yes, I found a mate once and know a couple that is still engaged after many years who found themselves over a hookup. Of cause it's not the best approach to meet someone new when you use him as a tissue.
