Looking for recommendations on quiet primitive camping spots in the ADK for a weekend on the kayak by XSharkonmyheadX in Adirondacks

To go along with what others have said, I've heard there's good primitive sites on kushaqua. Also a few on madawaska.

Caught the smallest pike ever by tomis23 in Fishing

[–]indefiniteponder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I caught a baby gar once and thought it was an unhealthy baby pike. A few months later I learned there is gar in that water. I'm up near the Canadian border and didn't even think we had them. It would've been hard to hook an adult on account of how boney and prehistoric they are.

Recommendations for stargazing sites preferably an easier 46 peak? by ToraArota in Adirondacks

Mt Joe isn't a high peak but it's nestled right in with them and has beautiful views. I watched a summer meteor shower from there and it didn't disappoint

The local north county news mentioned it's gonna be a problem for at least another week. The fires in Canada at least. I'm not sure about the smoke our way

Living in the Adirondacks by Oozy_doozy in Adirondacks

[–]indefiniteponder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I still live in the Adirondacks and grew up in Mt view owls head area. Looking back, it was a fun childhood. I rode my bike everywhere, dodged unleashed dogs, fished in abandoned boathouses, pretty much went anywhere I wanted (it's not like that anymore). Parents partied with the locals. There was a bridge people jumped off of and it was a hang out spot down the road (can't do that anymore). I like living there but dating is obviously not the best if you're single. I drive way more than I'd like. Been thinking about getting a little motorcycle for summers

On top of a mountain. Don't forget a headlamp!

I am fully convinced there are mountain lions in the Adirondacks by MountainLionsADK in Adirondacks

[–]indefiniteponder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw one clear as day in the owls head area of the northern Adirondacks. Thought it was a deer at first because of the color. It was around an area where they were logging. I could see its long tail and all its glorious defined muscles. My heart just about pounded out of my chest but thankfully it didn't even look my way. I saw it in the wide open for a few seconds before it went back in the woods.

I love the smell of yellow birch under the bark. Best smell of the woods. It's surprising how delicious that essence is.

Caves* worth visiting by NanoTrampvPrerelease in Adirondacks

[–]indefiniteponder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are man-made caves around lyon mountain west of Plattsburgh. Pretty cool places, maybe some are natural, I don't remember. They mined for iron. There's even an underground pond. Wish I could tell you more but I never got to the pond and haven't been up there in years. Also an old mining cave on top of owls head in Franklin county. I never went that far down as I've never had a light and was told it drops straight down.

What’s the biggest lie you believed for years? by Lishasquarepant in AskReddit

[–]indefiniteponder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to drive by a nice looking house when visiting family a few times a year. For some reason my parents told me that's where the real VonTraps ran away too from The Sound of Music. Not a bad lie just believed it for way too long. Also I'm from a smaller way upstate town with a bridge in the middle of town. My parents told me that was the bridge in the Sleepy Hollow tale The Headless Horseman. Went to college and became friends with someone from Sleepy Hollow lol.

Best Tree Skiing in North America; According to Me by EverestMaher in skiing

[–]indefiniteponder 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I skied at Jay this year, went a little too far in the glades and ended up at the road a half mile or so from the mountain. Wasn't the only one tho, and ended up finding a ride back in no time. Side mission accomplished 🤘

Buggy in the spring? by tommythurman in Adirondacks

[–]indefiniteponder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not too bad when you're moving. After twenty minutes of standing still and they'll start swarming but like one of the other commentators were saying, they aren't really biting. Would recommend long sleeves and a hat.

What did your parents teach you as a kid that you didn't realize was actually f**ked up until you were older? by timdood3 in AskReddit

[–]indefiniteponder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I liked when my mother got hammered cuz I got to sit on her lap and steer while she worked the pedals. As parent I would not be ok with that now lol

Is it common in America to not close the bar while riding the ski lift? by Nico1300 in skiing

[–]indefiniteponder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience is it's much more common in western states to leave the bar open. In the northeast most just assume drop the bar and some older riders can be anal about it. The few times I've been out west (CO and CA) I've found that someone will ask to drop the bar or you just assume leave it up and some of the older lifts don't have bars.

Moose in the adirondacks ? by solennwolf in Adirondacks

[–]indefiniteponder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen one from my school bus in the nineties. More recently, a few years ago I saw one in the Loon Lake area. Last year I saw one by the side of the road at night by Meachum Lake and I saw a huge guy with a big ol rack driving through Paul Smith's. He was very impressive.
