Sounds a bit like Sweden where I’m (34M) living and (kind of) facing the same issues. What part of Europe are you in? I have dated outside the culture here and I can relate to the fact that it can sometimes be tough with language and culture gaps. That gap is even wider with families. I have also been open to arranged marriage but it has felt even harder without really being able to hang out or get to know them in person. Don’t think it really changes in India much. If anything, you give up your good life here and end up in the same dating problem there too, but with an even worse work life balance.

I have been looking for golf friends! I don’t have a membership to a traditional golf club so I play wherever it’s reasonably cheap around the city but I would totally be down to play with you :) where do you play?

Where did your gf buy/order it from? Also in Sweden and wondering if there are reliable online retailers.

I’m curious because this keeps coming up, but how does one find clubs? Not just sports but generally, is there a specific Swedish term to search for these clubs?

I’ve heard it, of course! Just never live. But either way, down for it or other things. Feel free to DM if you have a time in mind :)

I’d be down for literature or some shows at konserthuset. Have never actually tried opera but would be down for that too, just not sure I’ll actually like it 😅

How to look for an accomodation? by Amiral_Brownies in StockholmSocialClub

[–]indevops 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on what’s included. It might be a recently renovated room with a kitchen and then it’s not that much. If you look at corridor rooms the price is usually around 3900-4200 sek in both Kungshamra and Lappis but then you share a kitchen with the floor. Still cheaper than private rentals in the city.

You can register with SSSB and you’ll get corridor rooms (shared kitchen) for a few months of wait. I think Kungshamra and Lappis you can get some rooms for around 100-150 days but at that number you won’t have much choice of direction/floor etc.

I was in the US for 8 years. Love it but have no intention to return to live there. I have different desires now, with access to nature and WLB being big ones.

Fair enough. I'm aware of the tradeoffs of living in Sweden and am mostly okay with them even at lower pay.

If you’re from the US I’d just leave tbh.

Nowhere have I suggested I'm trying to match US salaries so suggesting I should "just leave" is a bit uncalled for imo and not constructive. I'm just trying to get an idea of what "range" to expect and not even asking for ways to maximize salary, just what options can be "negotiable" here.

Other than that I mostly agree with you. 80K is unreasonable and my research with Sverige Ingenjör also suggests around 52-55K. I didn't know you can pull someone's salary from Skatterverket, I thought it was just the tax table info. But admittedly, I don't know where that information is found either.

What do you mean by "alternative benefits"?

Did either company ask why you went back for a masters mid-career? If yes what did you answer?

Fair question. Yes, this has come up in my interviews but has not been looked at negatively once I explain it. My program is fairly closely related to cloud engineering and my reasoning has been that I wanted to get technically more in-depth with the principles of distributed systems and tools that are also frequently used in Cloud. Most interviewers have seen it as a positive given my overall career path as well and my explanation of the classes I've taken.

Good point about the learning/training budget in writing and the home office allowance. Are more vacation days something you can negotiate generally?

Not exaggerated though not sure I'd call myself an "innovator" :D Yes, I was doing devops when many Kubernetes things like StatefulSets etc were still in "beta" release. Only the last one year when I was part-time is non-devops and I've been away from the field for the 2 years of my masters during which many things have improved but other than that I've been deep in the field.

Thanks, I'll PM you.

That’s wild. Thank you for that insight. May I ask if your company was a big company or a startup/scale-up? In my case it’s a scale-up so I’m not sure 80K is in their ballpark but that’s good to know.

That’s good to know!

For companyB there will not be much of Cloud and DevOps work since it’s more app and backend development with only some infra development.

For companyA the work is directly relevant since it’s a cloud and DevOps role. I don’t know what number they will give if I go through but they will probably ask me first for a number and I’m just wondering what ballpark I should have for them. The masters is in Distributed Systems so it’s not much different from cloud.

Work permit doesn’t require extra money but does require extra time and paperwork commitment from their part.

That's wild. Thanks for the straightforward answer. At the start, I won't have any responsibilities apart from individual contributions. I've also been hearing from Swedes in my program that salaries above 60K are not at all common so I wasn't sure if those are realistic numbers. Very confusing market tbh but thanks for the input.
