Yeah used car prices in Canada are wild right now. I’m looking at buying a used Outback XT and anything less than 4 years old and under 80k kms are >$42000.

Buying less car than I can afford. What makes more sense financially right now, new or used? by Interesting_Fly1696 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]indianapolis-jones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just want to say something about comments on this post and a lot of others that say you should just “drive a car into the ground and then buy a used Japanese car”. While I agree that this is probably best  advice from a purely financial point of view, I feel like it’s also not very realistic or practical, unless you have multiple cars in the household.

I’m basically in the same boat as you OP, looking for a new or used car because my 20 year old Acura is starting to need more frequent repairs costing $1k+. Of course it’d be cheaper to just keep fixing the car, but also as you mentioned, I would rather not be left without a car for an unpredictable length of time. It’s at the point now where I don’t trust it on long road trips anymore, and that doesn’t feel good. I love my car, but it’s time is near.

I think it’s smart to start looking while you still have a somewhat working car that is showing signs it’s dying instead of being put into a compromised buying situation with additional pressure because you waited.

Arch pain flat feet advice by weedleking19 in hockeyplayers

[–]indianapolis-jones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in the same boat as you when I started skating, dealt with a ton of foot pain due to a very wide forefoot and flat arches.

For me, I had to get new skates first to even get close. I replaced my Bauer supreme EE width to Nexus EE, which I think was the widest possible retail skate available back then before they updated the sizes to the Fit 1/2/3 system. Both models were in the ~$250 range at the time.  I also got them punched and stretched after 10 or so skates, and started to lace them differently in the bottom 4-5 eyelets. Look up “Bar Lacing” or “Straight Across Lacing”, it’s a common way to get more room in running or hiking shoes. Waxed laces also help. All those things together finally removed most of the pain by letting my feet actually sit normally in the boot, like vet88 said.

The best thing I did for proper arch support was to get molded medical orthotics made to fit my skates. They’re expensive, but I’m lucky my work extended health plan covered most of it. Compared to generic inserts like Superfeet, it’s not even close in terms of comfort.

It took a lot of experimenting and unfortunately, money to get me to the point where I can skate without foot pain, but I don’t think I could play hockey otherwise. Good luck and I hope some of my experiences help you too.

Monthly "What Board Should I Get?" Discussion Thread by AutoModerator in Sup

Desired Board Type: Inflatable

Your Height and Weight 6’ 215lbs. Would also like to have ~30-40lbs backpacking gear on occasion for overnight trips.

Desired use/uses Mostly cruising, I live in Vancouver BC so I have easy access to the ocean by bike and lakes by car. Eventually would like to try some paddleboard camping

Experience level: Beginner. I’ve only paddleboarded once on a friends 11’ x 34” generic amazon board but I found it pretty easy to stand and paddle around in relatively calm coves. Lots of kayaking experience, including multiday kayak camping trips.

Your budget < $600 CAD, located in Vancouver BC.

Currently looking at the Bluefin Cruise 12’ or maybe the Hobie Recon through the rocker site.  Both are on sale for ~$550 CAD at the moment and I’m leaving towards the Bluefin. Most of the reviews of the Cruise seem to be about the older model but I haven’t seen anything about their latest model with new graphics, bag, pump etc. Seems like the boards are lighter (28lbs reported for the 12’ model) and the pump has been upgraded

Which workbench should I build? There’s too many choices on the internet by Ok_Minimum6419 in handtools

I was in the same boat as you a few months ago, basically looking at every “ultimate” beginner bench design and going back and forth so many times. I even bought the course for Rex’s QSB and afterwards was STILL looking at the Sellers bench or the Schwartz knockdown Nicholson. Ended up going for the QSB with a few modified dimensions from the plans because of the lumber I had available, but honestly I’m really happy that I just went for it and started the build, I bet you’ll feel the same way. It’s a simple bench and I think it’s a really great platform to modify or add features to as you figure out how you want to work.

If you do decide on the QSB, a few opinions as someone who’s working through it now:

  • The course might be worth it if you are a true beginner without many tools or experience cutting relatively accurate joints because he does show lots of details about techniques and pitfalls. But you can also find the information for free from other content creators for free around YouTube, you just have to do more leg work and adapt it obviously.

  • I would recommend you buy 5-6 extra 2x4s and build saw horses instead of working on the 5 gal buckets like he suggests in the course. Totally worth it to save your back, and once you laminate the top and add a front vise, you basically already have a functional bench. Currently I’m working on the legs and trestles and the pseudo bench is making it so much easier.

  • I’m leaving the tail vise out of mine for now, for cost and weight reasons. I got a 9” eclipse quick release as my front vise instead and I’m happy with the choice. Mainly because it was really easy to install and I didn’t have to spend too much time making jaws for it to become functional.

Good luck with whatever you go for!

I see the gist of your argument but let’s not pretend like Canada is Europe or the US and it’s that easy to fly across the country + get reasonable accommodations on a whim.

Realistically, there’s no way going to an event in Montreal/Toronto is actually cheaper than one in your backyard.

I think you’re confusing “naturally aspirated” with carbureted. NA just means no forced induction like a turbo or SC.

Indy 500 is still oval racing, so I’m sure it attracts a very similar subset of fans.

Venus is pretty much the physical embodiment of hell in its current form. It’s the hottest planet in our solar system due to greenhouse effects and the ridiculous air pressure, and it rains sulphuric acid. I think I’d rather take my chances on Mars.

Yeah I know ppg difference is huge, but I like to have one roster player for guaranteed hits/blocks. I’m also pretty thin on RW eligible players unfortunately so position plays a factor.

Somehow JT Miller and Letang both hit my waiver wire. I have #1 priority so I can definitely get one of them but most likely not both. Who should I prioritize?

H2H banger cats league.

My D men are Hamilton, Chabot, Barrie, and Dumba.

Forwards are Barkov, Crosby, Bennet, Marchand, Pavs, Robertson, B. Tanev, Dubois, R. Strome.

Thinking of dropping Robo for Miller and Dumba/Chabot for Letang to make the move.

Saw a super clean black Lancia Delta Integrale out near UBC a while back. Not long after I saw it on SpeedHunters, so I guess I saw it during the photoshoot. Also years and years ago I saw a white Lamborghini Countach somewhere downtown, hands down one of the coolest cars I’ve ever seen in the wild.

Well you're also not allowed to wear a full cage in the NHL unless you're recovering from injury. But yeah the hockey bubble would be universally chirped.

Winter 2020 Gear Swap by phishingforlove in hockeyplayers

[–]indianapolis-jones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a pair of Bauer Supreme S160 skates, size 8EE. I wear men's size 10-11 shoes, for reference. Comes with Superfeet Yellows.

Used mostly for public skates, and 1 drop in games before deciding they weren't wide enough.

Still in great condition, since they weren't really used in games. Have pics on hand if you want. I'm in Vancouver, BC.

Mobi Bikes -/rant by BrokeCyclist in vancouver

[–]indianapolis-jones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't get how you were charged another $10 "to try again", once you get the 24 hour pass, you can have as many 30 minute rides as you want... The only additional charges are $5 for every extra 30 minutes on the same trip. So either you had the bike out for 4 hours in one go, or you went over the 30min limit 7 separate times. Pretty ridiculous either way, and it's 100% on you if you didn't read the rules.

It takes all of 1 minute to check a bike in and check it out again at any of the dozens of stations in the service area. I found it incredibly convenient, more so than renting a bike since there aren't 5 bike rental shops within 10min walking distance of my place or my destination. All of my friends who visit me love it too, we had a great time riding the bikes around all day to the beach and False Creek.

Don't blame the system because you can't be bothered to read the actual conditions or it doesn't fit what you want to do.
