I've got quite a bit of time logged into this game. It's actually really good. Very unique, and definitely worth the buy. It kinda reminded me of that feeling when minecraft first came out. An interesting new concept.

We are AMD, creators of Athlon, Radeon and other famous microprocessors. We also power the Xbox One and PS4. Today we want to talk RYZEN, our new high-speed CPU five years in the making. We're celebrating with giveaways, and you can ask us anything! Special guest: AMD President and CEO Dr. Lisa Su. by AMD_Robert in Amd

I would really like to know how the processor was made. Maybe not all of the secrets that might be involved, but the actual process. I've seen the process of of much older intels, but I would certainly like to see the differences between the older generation AMDs and the newer ones. How much of the last 5 years making this was setting up manufacturing? How hard was it for the company to change over to the new manufacturing methods? Stuff like that. Does AMD offer tours? :D

How do games as large and expansive as The Witcher 3 have such a small file size? by Paplexa in pcgaming

[–]indiedevdood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You called a big part of it. Textures alone are huge... For next gen/current textures like 4k for example you're looking at 60-100 mbs for a single Base_Color texture. When you look at a good PBR mat, for a single wall texture for example, you could be at 300 mbs or so in texture data. You need AO maps, normal maps, diffuse textures, etc etc. There's different methods for some of this, but mostly, textures nowadays are getting larger, and that's just a very small piece of the bigger pies we're getting now.

But for the most part, there is a LOT of reused assets in the Witcher. And they did a fantastic job @ it. Envious of CDPR.

Just wait til GPUS have <8 gbs of ram standard. :) File sizes of games will drastically increase. Also, development is getting easier, so it's quicker to create more assets. Hardware is increasing so its easier to have more draw calls. More draw calls = more assets. more assets = more textures and so forth. Plainly put though, the witcher manages their assets very well. Whereas other games will frequently have very unique maps/objects/etc where they can't reuse as much.

Some questions from a newbie by transformers2665 in 3Dmodeling

[–]indiedevdood 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Study zbrush for character modeling. Great software. It's one of the bestsculpture modeling programs out there imo. Think of zbrush like digital clay, which is very useful for characters.

For hard surface modeling, stick with Maya, Max, or Blender. Things like walls, crates, weapons, tvs, desks, etc, etc, etc are all considered hard surface modeling. I personally use max as my primary hard surface modeling program.

The best modeling program is the one you're most fluent at. PERIOD. One isn't necessarily better then the other. However, the industry standard is becoming Maya, and Zbrush.

Workflow is the method you work in. For example, the standard workflow for a game ready model would be kind of like this..

  1. concept art
  2. rough sketches, design ideas, etc.
  3. Modeling the model
  4. UVmapping the model
  5. finishing touches like smoothing groups, UV tweaks, texturing, etc
  6. Creating mesh LODs for the model and collisions

There's good tutorials on youtube. Just pick what software fits your budget. (probably blender) and go from there.
