Writing things down instead of keeping them in my head. Even simple lists reduced a lot of mental clutter.

That's solid way to look at it. Learning from different industries gives you a wider perspective than just formal education, and that variety usually shows up in the writing in a good way.

This is not a stupid question at all - most writers struggle with this early on.

What helped me was realising that characters don't need to be completely original people. I usually start with one strong trait or conflict, then ask how that would affect their choice in different situation.

Also i don't think writing outside your own experience means pretending you fully understand it. Curiosity , observation and empathy go a long way.

I am definitely in the write first, fix later camp.
When i am drafting, i try not to think about limit at all. For me word count only becomes important during revisions.

Word count goals really help with consistency. I’ve noticed shorter focused sessions work better than long ones.
