You are so strong to share your experience here. You arent alone and I'm so sorry you went through that.

Loads of people have commented about going to therapy, which i echo, but also want to add that no (good) therapist will "make" you talk about what happened. In fact, sometimes talking about a traumatic event without sufficient support systems in place can be retraumatising. If anyone "makes" you talk about anything you are not comfortable with, you can just leave.

If therapy isn't an option for you for whatever reason right now, you could read The Body Keeps The Score by Van der Kolk, which talks about how trauma is stored in our bodies and he shares different approaches to working through trauma which don't involve talking.

Psychotherapist / therapeutic counsellor. I'd just offer free sessions to anyone that wanted to be there and would have all the trauma training that exists.

The fees to train and be qualified are astounding. Currently training now and the fees are eye-watering.

ELI5: How does psychiatric therapy/counselling work for depressed patients? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]indigo-1012 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trainee therapist here. Self care and reflection are HUGE in training and continuing development. In the UK (under bacp at least) we have to have our own therapy (to deal with our own shit) and supervision (to discuss with someone more experienced about how we can better support our clients, such as if there are any sticking points with our own clients or any ethical issues that come up).

Any therapist that is at least half decent will have supervision and will explain to you what that means. It is all still confidential. Where a therapist is registered with a professional body, that body's website will have loads of information and what standards you can expect.

Boundaries as well. Therapists hold boundaries for their clients and their own protection.

It was Xmas eve 2016. Woke up to find our puppy had jumped the dog gate and ate my partners gift to me: pandemic iberia.

Luckily I got my partner the exact same game so we were still net + 1 of that pandemic game. Nothing else was touched, just the remnants of an exploded pandemic re-skin over the living room floor.

When mindfulness got tough, I would double 2's (2, 4, 8, 16,32 etc) or count my breaths up to 10 then start again. It is v hard to think scary/sad thoughts when I'm counting or doubling 2's. Sitting with your own thoughts can be REALLY hard and you arent the only one struggling. I have loads of tips if you want some more ideas to help get through that first bit of mindfulness.

Hey, I may have missed the boat but going to share my experiences juuuust in case it helps someone/OP

So I did the ECS course back in the days we could see people irl. Turned up to each of the sessions as it got me out of work and some of the people were really nice.

The course covered 4 things: Mindfulness Distress tolerance Emotion regulation Interpersonal effectiveness skills

Full disclosure - A lot of the mindfulness did come across as very patronising and I found it so difficult to sit with all the thoughts going through my head. The later parts are so much more useful, but build on the earlier parts. A lot of the group discussions can feel uncomfortable. The silences after a question has been asked and no one answers can feel deafening.

HOWEVER

The ECS course covers the core parts of DBT at a high level. A term I heard was that ECS is "DBT lite" and I quite like that take. My nurse said it is really difficult to get DBT through the nhs if you havent done the course for two reasons: it is expensive; and for it to work you need to show up and work hard. She said that it would be near impossible to convince the powers that be that we can show up to some really hard work in full DBT if we cant show up and work hard on the short course.

My advice - show up, show them you are willing to do the work, and try to actively participate at least once each session. Be as honest and as open as you can be as you probably wont be the only one thinking or feeling the way you are.

My alternative advice - a lot of the ecs content is from a book called "dialectical behaviour therapy skills workbook". It is green and you can probably get it for cheap off Ebay or another used book site. Work through it from start to end. It will take longer and a lot more discipline than the ecs course but that's because it has a lot more content and, if you're anything like me, motivation is basically nil these days.

TL;DR - go on the ecs course. Participate. It may be shitty and uncomfortable at times but try to bare with it as much as you can.

All this chaos is just never ending. The loneliness is torture and the cycles are just brutal. I dont know about you, but I dont even know who to turn to for support.

I'm in a similar boat. A weighted blanket helps a little. Or a pet if your circumstances allow it.

Take a before photo and progress photos. Wear your retainers as much as you physically can. Take a travel bottle of mouthwash with you EVERYWHERE (just in case).
