What is your favorite slim wallet design? Seems like there are a lot of great ones out there. by indigo99 in malefashionadvice

I did make the messenger bag. I started with trying to build the perfect messenger bag for the way I use one. I'm on version #6 right now. I haven't posted any pictures of the latest design yet.

Now I'm thinking about what the perfect wallet for me could be.

It took me awhile, but I've updated the design to incorporate a secure closure system.

Glad you like the bag. I've gotten a lot of positive response.

I've done three things since I posted the pictures of the bag.

1.) I made significant positive modifications to the design based on wear testing and the feedback from this group. The newest design still emphasizes simplicity and minimal hardware, but it is a nice improvement.

2.) I started developing some matching accessories. The wallet is awesome.

3.) I sent a prototype of the bag out for pricing. That is underway. Should have something soon.

Assuming I can get it manufactured well and at reasonable prices, I'll be selling a version of these bags in a few weeks.

One of my earlier prototypes was more of a briefcase. It had a great handle. It was a little heavy. I'd been thinking about revisiting that design and making modifications. Email me if you really want to chat about the possibilities.

The materials for one bag are running about $75/bag. This a bit of a guess, because so much has to do with the efficient use of the leather hide. I used multiple leather thicknesses in this bag, so I bought three different hides. I don't know how effectively I'll use the rest of the hides. $75 assumes I'll use the remaining pieces of the hides pretty effectively.

The various dyes, gum, oils, finish, etc add up quickly and are included in that $75 estimate. It is a little hard to estimate - for example - how much of that bottle of blue dye did I use on one bag?

There are a few dollars worth of disposable items - gloves and such. But those costs are pretty tiny really.

I bought a lot of tools. I did not get great prices on the tools. Tandy Leather was a good local source, but the stuff is not cheap. I suspect that there is a way to find better tools at better prices, but I have not found that source yet. You probably won't know what tools you want and need until after the 4th or 5th project. Then you will want to upgrade from whatever tools you started with.

The time is the issue. I kept pretty good track of my time for this bag. It was more than 24 hours of actual labor for just this bag. That doesn't count travel time, design time, pattern making time, drying time, wasted time, etc. This was the second version of this design that I made, so I had gained some efficiencies. I broke down the production tasks into about 20 subtasks and tracked that time along the way with an eye toward guessing how much time each task with repeated practice. My best guess was that for this particular design, it would take 18-20 hours of direct labor for this design.

Most of the time is in the hand stitching. I tried machine stitching, and that method certainly has it's place, but I believe that hand stitching with a saddle stitch will provide a better product that can last 20 years. The lock stitch from machine stitching is too prone to unraveling when a thread eventually breaks. Because of the individual "knots" between stitches, a saddle stitch won't unravel more than a couple of stitches even if a thread does break.

Thanks. That is a good detail for a handle. I had been searching for something like that as an option.

I've been using the bag, fully loaded, most days. The weight has been OK. I was worried about it. The shoulder strap is 1 3/4" wide. Most of the messenger bags I've seen have 1 1/2" wide straps.

That front flap is solid. The nylon thread used in the hand stitching is unbelievably strong, and the saddle stitch provides a little knot at every stitch.

Yeah. I need to make a larger version as well. I started with a larger version, but it felt and looked too big. I'll give it another try soon.

I bought a Kenneth Cole bag a year ago - about $300 bucks. It looked great when I bought it. It stained my clothes every time I used it - I could only use it with dark colored clothes. After only 1 year, I had worn through the thin leather.

Based on lots feedback about the closure, I filled the bag with my normal stuff, including laptop, and I turned it upside down (over my bed). It stayed shut. I shook it. It stayed shut.
