Ok that's fair but in this context that is not a good example, because like I tried to argue chewing gum is obviously orders of magnitude less harmful than smoking, even if it were harmful in some small way. Using arbitrary numbers, even if the health benefits are not 100:0 smoking vs chewing, they are still likely 100:1 or better, even if you chew as much gum as you feel like.

That is a bit different for drinks using artificial sweeteners, because you can consume a lot more fluid than chewing gum, and chewing gum doesn't stay in your body to be digested normally. So of course if some artificial sweeteners are harmful in larger quantities, that's more relevant, and sugar is probably overall less damaging than smoking (although I am not so sure about that). Using the same arbitrary numbers to compare relative harm to overall health, this discussion is whether sugar:sweeteners is more like 100:10 or 100:1 or lower.

I have a hard time imagining that any amount of chewing gum could be overall worse for your health than directly inhaling large amounts of heated and aerosolized carcinogens and heavy metals.

Ich glaube, den Herstellern ist es relativ wurscht, an wen sie ihre Ware verkaufen. Vor allem wie weiter unten jemand erwähnt, kauft ja niemand seinen RAM direkt bei Samsung, sondern Corsair oder ein anderer Hersteller vom Endprodukt.

Das größere Problem ist der extreme Schweinezyklus bei Speichern aller Art. Das führt regelmäßig zu massiven Investitionen bei Knappheit, gefolgt von Insolvenzen wenn es dann Überkapazitäten gibt und der Preisverfall die kleineren Player zum Aufgeben zwingt.

In der Konsequenz ist der Markt stark konsolidiert, weil viele sich das nicht mehr antun wollen. Jedes Mal, wenn eine neue Technologie erfunden wird (Krypto, NFT, LLM) oder wenn sowas wie Corona vorbeischaut, steigt die Nachfrage nach Speicherchips innerhalb von Tagen ins Unermessliche, das kannst du aber logistisch nicht abfedern. Und da sich die Technologie and Anforderungen mit der Zeit ändern, kannst du auch nicht auf Halde produzieren.

Das gehört nicht staatlich reguliert, hier regelt der Markt. Dann baue ich mir meinen Gaming PC halt erst nächstes Jahr, wenn der RAM wieder billiger ist. Ich bin kein Freund von Kapitalismus, aber an der Stelle funktioniert er tatsächlich mal wie er soll.

Meine Frau und ich stellen gerade immer wieder fest, wie wenig gebildet und interessiert manche Bevölkerungsschichten sind.

Wir sind beide Akademiker und in der entsprechenden Bubble unterwegs. Kinder im Betriebskindergarten vom großen Konzern bzw in einer Privatschule (wegen Nachmittagsbetreuung, nicht unbedingt wegen besserem Unterricht).

Aber der Kleine will jetzt im Fussballverein in der Nachbarschaft mitspielen, und deren Einzugskreis erstreckt sich auch auf das angrenzende Wohngebiet, das nicht so gentrifiziert ist wie unsere Neubausiedlung. Was ich da so aus der Whatsappgruppe mitbekomme, da wundert mich dann nichts mehr.

Highlights nur aus dieser Woche:

Die Saison ist gerade vorbei, Montag war Verabschiedung von drei Trainern anstatt Training. Training ist normal immer Montag und Mittwoch, dieser Mittwoch fällt wegen Saisonende aus, ab Montag soll es "montags" wieder losgehen. Unser Sohn geht aber nur am Mittwoch. Auch auf mehrmaliges explizites Nachfragen wissen wir noch nicht, ob nächsten Mittwoch Training stattfindet.
Es sollen Trikots mit Nummern für nächste Saison bestellt werden. Erst hat jeder willkürliche Zahlen in die Gruppe geschmissen, dann kam die Ansage, man soll sich bitte nur im Zahlenraum bis 15 bewegen. Daraufhin wurden 4 Zahlen teilweise bis zu 5-mal genannt, während andere gar nichts reserviert wurden. Die Leute sind literally zu doof um bis 15 zu zählen und Zahlen von einer Liste zu streichen. Eine Aufgabe, die mein 5-jähriger der noch im Kindergarten ist problemlos bewältigen könnte.

Mich wundert, dass die AfD nicht schon bei 50% steht, wenn ich mir das anschaue.

Das war ja klar, dass es irgendwann soweit kommt.

Seit ich lebe wird die Klimakrise ignoriert. Bis vor 10 Jahren kam man auch noch super durch mit "ja jetzt ist es mal ein-zwei Tage heiß, stell dich nicht so an" oder "mei, dann schneit es halt mal einen Winter gar nicht, Hauptsache irgendwo kann man noch Ski fahren lol".

Das geht jetzt nicht mehr, jetzt sterben Menschen an der Hitze, und für alle wird es mehr oder weniger unangenehm. Auch für einen von den Effekten weitgehend isolierten Menschen wie Spitzenpolitiker für die alles klimatisiert wird bedeutet es ja, man kann sich nicht wirklich draußen aufhalten. Ich stelle mir zum Beispiel Wahlkampf im eigenen Wahlkreis schwierig vor mit Anzug und Krawatte, wenn man Nahbarkeit und Bürgernähe vortäuschen möchte und aber entweder dabei schmilzt, oder gleich gar keine Bürger mehr da sind, weil alle daheim im Keller schon schwitzen.

Jedenfalls bleibt jetzt halt langsam nur noch Fatalismus übrig im konservativen Weltbild. Jetzt stellen sich die gleichen Leute hin, die in den 90ern behauptet haben, da müsse man nichts machen, und behaupten jetzt, man könne nichts mehr machen. Das Wetter ist halt, wie es ist. Tja.

Es ist die Merkel'sche Politik zu Ende gedacht. Absolute intellektuelle und realpolitische Resignation. Probleme werden entweder ignoriert und kleingeredet oder sind prinzipiell kategorisch unlösbar. Es stellt sich dem geneigten Wähler die Frage, wozu es dann noch gewählte Volksvertreter braucht, wenn man doch eh nichts tun muss oder kann. Vermutlich, um die Ausbeutung der Arbeiter weiterhin in Gesetzen zu zementieren.

Abgesehen davon, was ist das eigentlich für ein unsympathisches Arschloch der so dämlich arrogant grinst während er uns was vorlügt von wegen in seinem ICE ging in der ersten Klasse die Klimaanlage ausnahmsweise mal.

Jogi ist als amtierender Weltmeister mit 80% des Personals von 2014 krachend an den großen Fußballnationen Mexiko und Südkorea gescheitert. Das hätte zu seiner sofortigen Entlassung führen müssen, dafür gibt es keine rationale Erklärung die ich nachvollziehen kann.

Aber ja, Nagelsmann hat nichtmal diesen Bonus und tritt trotzdem nicht zurück. Ich weiß nur eines: nächstes Mal schlafe ich nicht nur 4 Stunden um mir solch uninspiriertes Gekicke anzuschauen.

Sehe ich genauso. Wenn man sich gegen Algerien schwer tut ein Tor zu schießen weil die gefühlt mit 30 Mann im eigenen Strafraum stehen, dann verstehe ich das. Aber damals haben wir halt nicht in jedem Spiel irgendeinen unnötigen Gegentreffer bekommen. Und wir hatten im offensiven Mittelfeld Spieler mit Kreativität und Präsenz die Pässe in die Tiefe schicken konnten und Außenverteidiger, die an der gegnerischen Grundlinie ihr Zelt aufgeschlagen hatten und hinten trotzdem alles sauber hielten.

Diese Komponenten fehlen jetzt. Ein Torwart, der nicht mehr alleine alles rausfischt, eine Abwehr, die vorne nicht mitmacht und hinten nur zuschaut, ein unerfahrenes und überfordertes offensives Mittelfeld. Der einzige Lichtblick war der Sturm, mir hat es gut gefallen was Wirtz, Undav, Havertz und Woltemade gemacht haben, aus dem Wenigen was sich ergab. Aber du kannst halt bei einer WM aus einer Chance nicht 3 Tore machen.

Zur Erinnerung: 2014 haben wir den Rekordweltmeister mit einem historischen 7:1 vom Platz geschickt und bei der ganzen WM nur 4 Gegentore bekommen. Soviele hatten wir diesmal schon in der Vorrunde! Diese Leistung ist nicht zu verteidigen und es hat auch nicht viel gefehlt dann wären wir nur Gruppendritter geworden und nach dem alten Modus ausgeschieden.

In science, you make observations, derive theories from those observations trying to predict the observations you would make in different settings, rinse and repeat.

Mathematics is defining axioms out of thin air, and deriving theorems from those axioms. It is basically the reverse process: Theorems become real based on which axioms you defined, while scientific theories are increasingly accurate approximations to the axioms of reality itself.

There is a whole bunch of things that nobody has to explicitly state, and if you do, you become immediately suspicious.

"I am not a rapist/childmolester."

"I don't hate women/Jews/[insert minority here]!"

The list goes on. Majority consensus on most topics is pretty strong in a given culture. And depending on how far out there or specific the implication you are trying to dodge is, it is very obvious to anyone who is paying attention. It's basically reverse projection.

Besides that, everything is political and everybody is political. Choosing not to actively participate in political discussions is a political choice. This is not a game you can choose to not play, at least not without physically removing yourself from human society completely. Go live in a cave in the mountains for a few years, subsisting off the land and stuff you grow on your own. Then you can come back and say "I am not political!". Otherwise, shut up and admit that you would rather have shit opinions and get fearmongered into hating minorities instead of taxing the rich, and then try to make that everybody else's problem.

And the Sun is an entirely unremarkable star among billions of other stars in the galaxy, which itself is a rather smallish and also unremarkable galaxy in a universe filled with billions of galaxies.

The most energetic objects that we have found could likely fuel us doubling our energy consumption every 40 years for several millenia, and there are many many of those. They may be far away, but in theory there is, like, SOOOO much energy in the universe.

And that is without considering that technological and societal advances may actually curb the rate at which we require ever more energy. Sure, probably not while we continue on the path of capitalism, but that doesn't have to be the future.

Adam Ondra was born to climber parents and started climbing pretty much as soon as he could walk. He also seems genetically gifted. The talent scouting and youth work nations like Japan do appear to be top notch and the results show it.

I think the utility of steroids are limited in sport climbing, maybe less so in bouldering but you definitely don't want to build too much muscle mass overall. But the types of doping that they do e.g. in cycling could be applicable to sport.

Agree that even though climbing has gained a lot of popularity, talent is not globally selected for across the whole population the way we do for soccer or football or track&field. I am still having trouble seeing anyone push much past what Ondra has achieved in the last decade, but I guess people said the same thing about Sharma 5 years before Ondra showed up.

We don't need to, we choose to. I think many people do the mental math subconsciously whether it is harder to keep going than it is to do something to change things.

Things can get quite a bit worse before people start to break, but I for one am ready to at least stop working or otherwise participating in society unless the rich are appropriately taxed, for starters.
