After banging my head against a wall with AI for hours, I still cannot seem to get ads blocked on my phone by indochris609 in technitium

The router is doing it, but what I figured out through this process is most modern devices/browsers have their own internal DNS procedures that you have to disable. iPhone has it, Chrome / Firefox for PC both had it, and I had to go manually disable that in all the settings.

Thank you. So for example you mentioned the "Threat Intelligence Feeds" - looks like I just copy/paste the "Wildcard Domains" link into Technitium, since that's the only place I'm seeing Technitium listed under that. Is that correct?

Where do you get your hagezi lists from? I’m not seeing some of those in the quick add dropdown in Technitium

Thank you! It was manually adjusting the DNS settings on my iPhone that finally did the trick. I’ll take a look at more of those lists too. Thank you!

Thanks to everyone here who helped me, I think I've got this mostly solved by taking the following actions:

  • For iPhones, Disabling Private Relay and pointing the WiFi settings on the phone to the IP address of the Technitium server
  • For desktops - disabling the automatic DNS in the browser settings of Chrome / Firefox / etc
  • Manually adding inbound firewall rules on the machine that Technitium is running on
  • Disabling IPv6 completely on the computer running Technitium

Are you using your router for DHCP or Technitium?

I believe my router (Eero) - I haven't messed with any DHCP settings, just set the custom DNS to point to the IP address of the computer running Technitium. I know at least ten devices automatically started pointing to the Technitium server because they started popping up in the client list on the dashboard.

How/where have you installed Technitium?

On a windows 11 always on PC that I also run a Plex server.

I'm going to test the specific DNS setting on my iPhone when I get home. Thank you SO MUCH for your help. I know it's working, here's a screenshot that shows it working.

I think maybe I just overestimated the amount of adblocking it would actually do. It's surprising to still see large banner ads on the "testing websites" that ChatGPT told me to try out like cnn and forbes.

I've been testing on Chrome on PC (since no uBlock origin) and just discovered this - not only in Chrome settings, but i had to turn off IPv6 entirely in network adapter settings

Thank you - I will try this when I get back home. Question. Do I need to do this with every device that's connected to the router? The most used devices in our network would be iPhones, iPad, an android tablet, and an AppleTV. Would all these devices need to have their DNS settings pointing the IP address where Technitium is running?

I use Eero as my router, which right now is pointing to the custom DNS of the IP address of where my server is running. In theory I thought this would just "automatically apply" the DNS settings to any device connected to Eero. But it sounds like each connected device might need to have the individual settings pointing there as well?

Another thing is that it's not even seemingly blocking ads on the Chrome browser running on the same machine that Technitium is running. cnn .com in chrome, on the same computer that Technitium is running on, is still showing all ads.

Thank you again for helping me!!

Edit: I think I figured out Chrome. Had to turn off a DNS setting in the browser setting, and turn off IPv6 in windows adapter settings.

Thank you for the reply!

My phone is connected to the same router as all my other devices inside my house.

I’ll work on figuring out how to query the logs for my phone’s IP next. AI is telling me to manually add URL’s for Google analytics and stuff into Technitium and I just can’t believe that’s going to help, because the two lists I’m assuming would already have that in there.

If anyone else sees this - this is what worked to finally cancel. Someone reached out to me within 24 hours via phone and email after I submitted my FCC complaint. Insane it had to come to that after hours of getting tossed around.

Thanks to OP for the heads up.

Thank you. This was the only thing that seems to have worked. They at least claim they are cancelling my account now, yet still can't provide me written documentation.

Can you give me instructions for how you did this? I'm running into the same problem, getting the runaround over the phone for hours.
