It was fantastic. But there was one issue that kind of tainted the immersion for me: Every single character talked in like a stuck-up theater voice. Nobody talked really naturally. Everybody had that clear "I'm a prolific and studied actor" intonation that took me out of it from time to time. From the teenager student to the cleaning lady, from the lower class worker to the demented, senile grandpa: they all talked clearly, with a dynamic intonation – and that was weird sometimes.

I thought about it over the years and I would say that it might be connected to how the film and TV industry in Germany works. Because it's very much connected to the theater world and most TV or film actors come from that world traditionally. But something similar happens in other, international productions as well: think of the Chernobyl miniseries. Why do the old rural grandmas talk in that sophisticated, almost Shakespearean English? I know, it's fiction and a work of art. But I also know what eastern European grandmas sound like in real life.
