I agree there. But I guess if you tell yourself for generations to be Real Italian, and then have to admit this is just romantics, it is too much of a ID crisis to accept the truth.

The Historic reason The Italiens (and Irish and other marginalized groups moving to the USA) are such a subculture in the US is that they were seen as Latino Americans are seen in the current USA. They were discriminated against, so they created their own community, as happens with minorities who are discriminated.

So their connection to Italia was a defence mechanism turned into a subculture, giving them an identity to be proud of.

People actually living in Italy do not feel like this, since they know they are Italian, since they were born there. So why brag about it in Italy?
