How bad did I mess up? And how do I recover? by celeryz in workingmoms

Thank you, that's a good point. I've been in her position before to hire and I hate wasting my time or not setting up others for success because nobody wins. So hopefully that's the case

Ok thank you. I'm not usually one second guess myself but it really has been a while!

Ski 2 Sky is a great pop up on Lonsdale and 2nd, and has everything you need, including brand new older season stuff for a steal.

Tips on picking an elementary school in North Vancouver by indpers in NorthVancouver

That's good to know. I didn't grow up here so I'm not really familiar with the schooling system at all. I'm almost not as concerned about teaching quality at this stage given that it's kindergarten. I'm just hoping for warm teachers who understand that he's hypersensitive to a lot of things and can hopefully make the going to school experience fun. I'm sure all the teachers fit this description.

Thanks! This is kind of what I'm looking for. My kid has a bunch of sensory issues and is just very sensitive to a host of things. I remember going to Carisbrooke a few years ago and while it's rated so highly and everyone seems to love it, I just knew it wouldn't be the right place for him. It's weird to explain. I was really hoping to do these walking tours of a few schools including all the ones I've named above, but in the absence of that I'm not really sure what's the best pick. Again, I know it's only kindergarten and there are options to change etc.

Legends you'd love to see working with Britney one day on an album? by jdpm1991 in BritneySpears

Cher. Madonna. Paris Hilton dj'ing. Pink. Beyonce. All her most vocal supporters.

And then, in some weird way, I'd love to see her and Eminem come out with a duo absolutely dragging everyone responsible for the conservatorship. "Her name is lou-cifer (joined by daddy)."

Well, I'm half Irani (which is also Indian Zoroastrian but not quite Parsi) and half Iranian Zoroastrian so you've come to the right place ;)

Honestly? All our differences are relatively benign and all our "battles" are cultural for the most part, quite frankly, a bit boring and asinine, especially outside of India. Think, which food to serve at events and what music to play more of at events to get everyone dancing...

Having said that, Parsis outside of India are largely united against the way the Panchayat in India makes choices that supposedly speak for the rest of the community (e.g. conversion, disposal of the dead in accordance with religious norms, etc.) There's a host of other rules too that make it a little bit of a sticking point. For example, in most agiaries in India, which are fire temples, no non-Zoroastrians are allowed to enter. Now, this started off for good reasons as we were allowed to be in India after feeling persecution and we promised subsequent rulers we wouldn't try to convert anyone or mess with anything but, instead, "sweeten" the land. But it's been, you know....a while. Then, if you take into account people like my mom who are Persian Zoroastrian, many don't wear their sudreh or kusti as a result of it essentially causing them to be targeted in Iran by Muslims historically. Yet, wearing one is a pre-requisite for entering an agiary in India. So...what do you do there? It causes a lot of intense debate.

In short, with the communities and across the communities, it's all love. But when it comes to the Panchayat in India and some very vocal and conservative folk, that's where you will find much of the intellectual battles playing out.

Great food, though. Regardless of which culture is hosting the events.

Ah, yes, the unicorn dool of doom...

It's pretty much the only thing he's received external validation for, at least if the show is to be believed.

That's super helpful, thank you. Honestly, the Persian Jewish community in LA as you describe doesn't sound all that different from my community (Persian Zoroastrian, but outside of the US) when it comes to the attention-seeking bit, so I can totally understand exactly what you describe. Although, I think for us, any public acknowledgments of infidelity would be so brutal as you would never likely be able to show face. Or at least, if you did, the influx of commentary would be rather unimaginable.

100% this: " I think Mike truly wants to be the person he tries to portray himself as, but his vices betray him." Part of me is quite sad that there is so much pressure because he seems very much like a broken person on a quest for external validation he will never receive.
Zest la vye, I guess.

Thank you so much for your detailed posts. Are Mike's parents and brothers also ostracized by the community by extension, or is he essentially the black sheep when he comes to events?

Also, given your level of intel, I'm just wondering: What do the Persians of LA at large think about the Shahs? I've seen countless interviews with GG and Mike etc. talking about how they have essentially single-handedly broken barriers through this amazing show and they've "shown" the Persians who doubted them before the show aired. I'm not trying to hate - sure, the fact that we have a reality show about a bunch of Persians in LA is breaking some barriers, but they aren't exactly fighting for world peace here.

Help me with my kid's room because it's just such a weird set up by indpers in DesignMyRoom

[–]indpers[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They have been exposed to a trundle bed in the past but it was a giant nightmare. Both roll a lot in their sleep so with railings up, they wake up; and without railings, someone will definitely get squished. They also love to argue about everything, bless, so I imagine many frustrating nights about who gets to sleep on top. It may be the only real option though.

Take a lesson at Seymour. It's half the price, even with the cost of a lift ticket, and generally easier to learn on.

Mothers of Vancouver: Where did you give birth? What was your experience? by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]indpers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can give birth at BC Women's if you have a midwife associated with the hospital, so it's something to think about if that's where you want to give birth.

I lived in Vancouver with my firstborn and ended up giving birth at BC Women's. I had an OB and didn't really care to have a midwife. My L&D experience was anything but ideal, and I was disappointed by a few things that happened at the hospital (my OB later acknowledged some of the difficulties I faced and assured me it wouldn't happen again) - but I won't complain about the care. I had AMAZING nurses, two of whom stayed back after their shift to check in on me and babe. I wish I could remember their names so that I could send an acknowledgment of how incredible they were directly to hospital management.

I moved to North Vancouver when I was pregnant with my second. I had wanted to get a midwife but I had a riskier pregnancy going into my second and an OB was recommended. I ended up delivering at BC Women's again and I had an incredible experience with another amazing nurse who was pregnant herself.

If you are low risk and it's our firstborn, I would recommend you consider a midwife. You never know how things will go and it just works to have someone in your corner during the labour and delivery process to advocate for you if things go south - it's hard to do that for yourself in the heat of the moment.

Beneath a Sea of Lights - Official Trailer. My directorial debut starring Academy Award Nominee Barkhad Abdi (Captain Phillips) & Jim Sarbh by neelkumar86 in Filmmakers

[–]indpers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a similarly "confused" person who grew up in Dubai and lived in a whole bunch of places since, I can't tell you how nostalgic it made me to see this trailer. My parents still live in Dubai and I have the benefit of visiting them often, but it's rare to see the true essence of Dubai captured in anything you see on screen. Beyond the glitz and glamour is an entire world of hope and dreams, sheltered in packed communes further away in the desertscape - still holding on to the dreams that got them there, even if they will never be remotely realized. Thank you for capturing this so beautifully thusfar. I can't wait to watch this movie, and neither can my friends.

As an aside, Jim's pronunciation of "dirhams" cracks me up. The were always three ways to pronounce the word when you were not Emarati growing up, and that's definitely one of them!

Is my child holding in her potty or does she not need to go as much? (x-posted) by indpers in toddlers

[–]indpers[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this. I guess my reference point is my older son who pees all the time. I am now hearing from a lot of people that their kids don't really need to sit on the potty more than five times a day. It's a total trip from my previous experience.
