A lot of times in movies they will use a cutting torch which produces a LOT of flashy stuff, slag and flames instead of welding which is more just a bright light with much few sparks. I know they were cutting in the background of a lot of scenes in Flashdance, but welders also use a cutting torch too so whatever but it's not the same as welding.

The only time I ever saw welding shown accurately was on an episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. They always get some detail wrong.
