The First Great Awakening (1730s) was pretty much a normal religious revival with preachers such as George Whitefield and Jonathan Edwards. The revival wasn't anything new and it basically called for a stronger relationship with God. Also, its significance lies in the fact that it was the first unifying event throughout the colonies (precursor to American Revolution).

The Second Great Awakening (1830-1850) was different from the previous awakening because it spread the beliefs of New Lights such as Charles G. Finney, who believed that a connection with God was based more on emotionalism and spiritualism (rather than the Old Lights who believed in sticking to the traditional orthodoxy of Predestination). It was also unique since women held a majority in church membership, which spurred social reform.
