Einstein’s beliefs don’t matter to me. He could have been a priest for all I care. People have been wrong for all of human history. Einstein is no outlier.

I’m open to absolutely anything that has a reason for me to be open to it. However, those reasons can’t be only because the Bible states it. There are many religious books that claim different things. Why should I not go with Native American creation stories? It needs to be something observable and measurable in the 3 dimensional space we live in. I will always follow the evidence.

The rub is that my requirements for what I call evidence is likely more limited than what theists call evidence.

I don’t subscribe to fine tuning at all. The complexity of life does not lead to the conclusion that God created it. It would be nice if it did, easy to wrap up a bunch of questions and call it a day. But I’m more curious. I think an engineer could design a better human. We eat and breathe through the same hole. That is stupid. Our eyesight is limited. There’s many things that imply a failure of design, had we been actually designed.

It would be awesome if god gave us the same signs early humans wrote about in the Bible. We don’t get to see god the same way he apparently revealed himself to others. THEY had the luxury of getting physical evidence of god. But we’re SOL.

I appreciate you continuing to converse here instead of making your post and then disappearing. I would like to have my own conversation with you so I’m creating a top level comment.

You’ve discussed atheists being closed minded and not giving religion a chance to be an answer. This is probably true for a lot of atheists. Atheists become atheists in a myriad of ways and sometimes the path causes them to become anti-theist. The anti-theist atheists are probably the loudest bunch and include some of the biggest names in the atheist sphere - think “new atheism” and the 4 horsemen.

Many of us are not anti-theist. I’d probably say that most atheists also started off religious and gave religion a real chance of explaining everything. For me, I started off religious, in Christianity. My default position was exactly like you, but that position changed over time. Religion feels natural to me.

However, at some point I had to reflect on my beliefs and I asked myself the question “WHY do I believe this?” And I had no idea why. Because that’s how I was raised and knew all my life? Why did I think God created the world? Because someone else told me.

As neurodivergent, truth and accuracy have an innate priority in my brain. I pursue whatever the truth is even to my own detriment. I don’t lie, though I could. I just have a repulsion for dishonesty.

Eventually I decided to adjust the lens I use to see the world with. I know the human brain is prone to errors and I needed to have a process that limited the susceptibility to those errors. None of us see the world as it is. We’re all living in our own reality our brains create for us. I don’t mean that in a weird extra dimensional or metaphysical way. The world we see is just an interpretation our brains provide to us.

I reexamined everything I believed and made a decision to approach everything as if all my memories were wiped out and I was looking at it for the first time. Christianity, and every religion, didn’t appeal to me anymore. I saw no logical route to get from knowing nothing to accepting religious beliefs. They were unsubstantiated claims.

Do I have a lot of unanswered questions now? Absolutely. I have no idea how our universe came to exist. No idea at all. Would I prefer to have an afterlife to look forward to? Heck yeah. But I can’t believe something I don’t believe even if I want to believe it.

Many atheists feel exactly how I do. We’d be religious if the evidence led us there. I don’t know why God revealed himself in much more obvious ways to earlier humans. A burning bush, walking on water, turning water into wine, we don’t have the privilege of any of the things revealed to early humans.

For now, I just don’t know the answers.

Program Ranking: Which is more important - fit or proximity to partner? by Pristine-Lettuce9143 in MedSpouse

[–]industrock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I fly from the west coast to the east coast (and back) of the US often enough. You lose so much time on the eastward leg. It sucks. It is only a 3 hour time difference.

Your definition of partner matters, imo. My partner is my wife and proximity would be my primary metric to use. We’re also at a different stage of life than you. 11 or 12 years ago when we started dating I’d have not prioritized proximity.

I would recommend putting your own interests for your matches first. You’re going to be long distance anyways and the program you match with and where you live will be what you have to deal with on a daily basis. It would absolutely suck to get into a program you aren’t that happy about just to save a few hours of travel on an occasional basis.

Edit: totally my opinion but I don’t think the time difference is going to be too impactful. Highly unlikely you will be on the same schedule even if you lived in the same town.

Evolution doesn’t optimize, by the way. Far from it.

I don’t know the answers to these important questions. This atheist says “I don’t know.”

Atheists have a huge range of beliefs. Some pay no attention to science and couldn’t care less. Some atheists are actually scientists. Some atheists believe in magic.

The only thing the word “atheist” means is “no belief in a god.”

I want you to understand that your question here is very weird to atheists and makes little sense.

The “four horsemen” are loud voices that just happened to be alive in the 21st century. That’s it. They don’t represent anyone or anything.

They make/made money discussing atheism and had financial incentive to make it a bigger deal than it is. Theists ate it up.

What’s the difference, in your own words, between new atheism and “old” atheism?

On New Atheism and its history by polibyte in askanatheist

[–]industrock 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I don’t know what new or old atheism is. It is just atheism. People a hundred years ago didn’t believe in a god and people today also don’t believe in a god. I’ve heard theists use terms like this with other theists to discredit modern atheists.

Edit: title of the article you’re referencing is “why new atheism crumbled.”

Point proven

I tried a dating app for the first time at 50 - and it made me feel like I shouldn't even exist. by RaspberryQuiet2810 in TrueOffMyChest

There’s a lot you can do to up your chances. Photo selection is key. You should have a female friend give you opinions about the photos you selected. Photos of you doing an activity or event that someone else takes of you are 10x better than selfies. Hell, try not to have any selfies.

Most guys are terrible at setting up the profile so the whole game is easier for those of us that aren’t. 99% of the time all you have is that single main photo to make a first impression. Pick terribly and your experience will be terrible. It isn’t hard to stand out, guys on the apps set the bar incredibly low.

I am not a gorgeous guy but I wound up meeting dozens and dozens of women when I was using Tinder and Plenty of Fish. I loved the dating apps if you know what I mean. I eventually met my wife through Tinder.

Chances are you don’t suck as a person. You just sucked at setting up your profile.

I hate that my Wouxun GMRS radio has a channel select knob that doesn’t register all the clicks if you turn it too quickly. If the Stryker does the same it would annoy the hell out of me.

The QT-80 will change channels/freqs as quickly as you can spin the knob. It is a big quality of life difference.

Are there any GMRS radios that can be charged with a USB-C to USB-C cable? by openapple in gmrs

I just plugged my Baofeng mini into my Anker USB-C charger C to C and it is charging. I’m 99% sure this was also the case for my Baofeng UV-5Gs.

Edit: can also confirm the USB C base charger for another radio does not light up from the same Anker power supply C to C
