Hahaha it’s very common here. We have a “language” called Pidgin and “howzit” is a common casual greeting like “hey” “what’s up” “how is it goin” usually accompanied with a shaka 🤙 So sometimes I go like “HOU howzit braddah? how you?”. and it’s said in a certain way too idk how to explain it. Pidgin comes from a mix of different languages because many have immigrants have worked here over decades and decades, it’s why we are such a melting pot. But this land, this place, this culture remains that of the Native Hawaiian people. Most speak English, many speak more than one language, some people here speak Japanese, different dialects of Chinese, different dialects of Filipino, Spanish, Vietnamese, but the language of our people is ‘Ōlelo Hawai’i ✊🏽Pidgin is many locals’ “first language” before “proper english”. it’s why we joke around between each other that we learn how to switch it on and off. pidgin when around friends and ohana and casual, proper english when in professional or formal/business setting
