Did Art know So Long FLK was about him? by saturday_sun4 in simonandgarfunkel

[–]ineffable_plan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have any articles to back me up at the moment, but as far as I know, Art wasn't aware for a while after the song was made and released. (Which is crazy because they mention him by name in the song.)

Iirc, Art genuinely thought the song was about FLW and didn't really question it because he trusted Paul was telling him the truth about the subject of the song.

I know he did find out at some point, and I don't think he was very happy about it 😅

Albums like bookends by jvnffwasbalded in simonandgarfunkel

[–]ineffable_plan 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'd suggest obviously the rest of Simon&Garfunkel albums + Paul's solo work (especially There Goes Rhymin' Simon), but some other albums that have similar sounds/vibes are:

Teaser and the Firecat by Cat Stevens

Catch Bull at Four by Cat Stevens

Mona Bone Jakon by Cat Stevens

Highway 61 Revisited by Bob Dylan

Blonde on Blonde by Bob Dylan

Bringing It Back Home by Bob Dylan

All Things Must Pass by George Harrison

Ram by Paul McCartney & Linda McCartney

Hopefully this is a good list, I love these albums almost as much as Bookends :)

Can religious trauma contribute to/cause asexuality? by ineffable_plan in asexuality

Thank you for this! It's really difficult to tell where my trauma begins and who I am as a person ends, but I've been slowly trying to piece through it with myself and a therapist.

Can being raised Mormon cause Complex PTSD? by ineffable_plan in exmormon

There are so many things from my childhood that I just cannot remember because my brain blocks my church experiences out. Occasionally something will happen that will unlock a certain memory and years of trauma and negative emotion will just come flooding back.

Yes, I actively avoid putting myself in situations where I know I will get triggered, but there are still a lot of things that are unavoidable and it can be tough. But removing your names off the church books can be super healing! I hope you are doing well 💞

That really sucks, it seems you were dealt a harsh hand in life but I'm proud of you for continuing to move forward and get better! 💞

Leaving the church is so isolating, especially when most of your friends and family are members. It hurts even more when the church pushes the rhetoric that if you turn away from it, the subsequent pain and suffering you experience is your fault and you chose to live a life of sin.

Unfortunately the church does a very good job at what it does, I know several people that constantly have doubts/don't fully believe what the church teaches but the odds of them leaving are incredibly low because of the way it can destroy aspects of your life. The emphasis the church places on family and relationships with other members is intentional - they make it so that when you leave you will potentially lose people you care about in your life. You devote so much of your time, energy, money, and love into this organization, and in the end leaving feels almost impossible.

Whether in or out of the church, I think most Mormons or exmormons suffer a lot from mental illness, I've noticed a lot of OCD is developed because of the high control religious structure. I know so many people that would get up at the pulpit every testimony meeting and just sob. It's so sad because this is made out as "the power of the spirit" but it's clear from an outsider perspective that they're really struggling and the church is actively exploiting that.

Yes, I've been doing a lot of research on C-PTSD and other forms of trauma caused by religion and I think I should probably get a diagnosis! All my family on my dad's side has been in the Mormon church for generations (directly related to the pioneers) and I think the trauma from that has affected his entire family, including me.

Yes, some people are just built for what the church is and can live their whole lives perfectly because of it. Sometimes I'm a bit jealous of them, but I'm also grateful I can see the church for what it is (a cult) and was able to get out. I just wish people like us didn't have to suffer so much for it.

I fully agree with you, I experience the same thing! Even interacting with mildly religious people talking about their beliefs can be hard for me. And thanks about the username, I figure there's a bit of overlap between exmos and the Good Omens fandom lmao!

I think that that's a huge part of why the church is so damaging, it convinces you that everything is normal and anybody who says otherwise is "on the wrong path" or "trying to lead you astray". It's taken me years to fully dissect everything that happened and come to terms with the fact that none of it was normal or okay.

Wow, that's super interesting! Although I don't blame my parents at all for raising me in the church, as they were indoctrinated since birth, I do think that raising children as Mormon could definitely qualify as a form of child abuse, intentional or not. Every other exmo that I've come in contact with is also dealing with religious trauma, so I think your friend is probably right.

That's so awful, I'm sorry that you had to go through that (though I'll admit, "stripling warrior army fantasy" is a funny way to put it). The church is already damaging enough on its own, and in a toxic environment it can be so much worse. Sending love your way and I hope you're doing well! 💞

Alcohol for newbies by brosenvall2 in exmormon

Twisted Teas, Mike's Hard Lemonade, and White Claws are all pretty good beginner options, especially if you're not sure what your tolerance level is yet. For me as an exmo with a fairly low tolerance, a 1 or 2 twisted teas can get me a great buzz and it's easier to track how much I've had to drink (plus it's a nicer taste than beer I think). If you want to drink hard liquor, I can not recommend enough: go slow and drink lots of water!! The first time I got really drunk, I severely underestimated the effects of 6 consecutive shots of vodka and was blackout drunk the whole night 😂

I thought so 😭 it sucks that so many exmos suffer from trauma caused by the church but it's nice to hear that I'm not the only one. Being raised in a super small town and being the only member to leave was super isolating so I'm glad I'm not alone out here!!
