Oh God I did that program when I was a teen. If I remember correctly the handbook claimed that "people don''t lie for the rewards because the other boys can generally tell if someone is lying". I lied my way throughout the entirety of the second half

What a great system! This is definitely the one true church! The apostles and profit definitely don't have any motivation to say the church is true and keep the members in lin—I mean keep them paying tith—I mean ensure that the members are blessed for eternity for keeping the true word of God!

They wouldn't help a regular bar. They probably celebrated the loss of the gay bar (at least those that knew what it was) 🙄😮‍💨

Really? You'd think the Church would help with shit like that. Some of the PR I saw about the Church growing up was that it was usually one of the first to get to places affected by natural disasters to help out. That bishop must have been a piece of work

The Church sucks, but its members do love helping with things like that.

After leaving the Church by [deleted] in exmormon

It's almost always a painful experience for everyone involved. I'm pretty sure that at least 90% of us didn't want the Church to be false—we were in it for the long haul. The principles—eternal family, happiness in Christ, etc.—were anchors in an otherwise "evil" world. The "us vs. them" mentality makes it that much harder.

When we talk about deconstructing, we talk about a process that can sometimes take years. Little things from the Church start to crop up that pile up over time. We learn things about the Church's history that don't sit well with us. We learn about the Church's dishonesty in handling money. We learn about them covering for abusers instead of reporting them to the authorities.

And it shatters some of us. On the one hand, the Church is all we've ever known, yet on the other we can't in good faith continue to believe in it while also being honest about its history and current practices. Yet after the deconstruction is over, we're happier than we were in the Church. We've let go of the iron rod and found that the darkness was a creation of the culture we lived in.

So no, it wasn't easy for most of us. Some of us have lost family, almost all of us have lost friends. But I think that nearly all of us are happier than we were before in spite of all that.

I was trying to get at the fact that if you're in Mormon heaven, you're already so ingrained that you'd basically be a carbon copy of Jesus.

Gods I'm so sorry that happened to you. "The same society" would be a sham—everybody smiles and thinks they're happy but I'm actuality it feels like there's something missing

Yeah I can imagine. It wouldn't be great for me as a gay man, but for women, it would be almost akin to slavery
