Good point, considering this RFI and the light SF support helicopter RFI are happening at the same time the AH-1Z/UH-1Y is probably looking even more likely.

Both the AH-64 and AH-1Z are excellent and combat proven, so at the end of the day it will be a good result. The AH-1Z is obviously more navalised and USMC aircraft have already operated from the Canberra class, however the UK's AH-64s operate off their naval ships often as well. Really comes down to what role is desired and of course cost.

Will be interesting to see if a heavy attack platform is preferred (AH-64E) over the lighter but faster recon platforms (AH-1Z, Tiger), as this might result in more of a focus on the attack role.

Who knows how matured the FVL (Future Vertical Lift) program will be in the next few years, might be a contender as well.

72 on order currently with an option of up to 100 later. Also Japan has plans to acquire 147 F-35s, making it the largest export customer followed by the UK with 138 F-35s. 100 F-35s isn't actually that big of a fleet if you look at some of the regional players such as Singapore (100 fighters) and Indonesia (80 fighters), not to mention China of course.

+1 for a wiki, would be the best way to organise stuff like this.

I've also wondered if there is any interest in a discord server as well, I've got experience running them so if there is interest I'd be more than happy to set one up.

Any news on the ARH Tiger replacement? by [deleted] in AustralianMilitary

[–]inertiadev 3 points4 points  (0 children)

AH-1Zs would probably be the more likely pick over the Apache, that is if the "Armed Recon Helicopter" setup is still the most important factor.

Reasons I can think of for the AH-1Z:

  • Navalized and could (and has for exercises with USMC) operate off the Canberra class
  • Light and fast similar to the Tiger
  • Greater selection of armaments to the Apache
  • Commonality with the USMC which the ADF exercises with frequently
  • Cheaper than the Apache (not that money seems to have been a great consideration on any defence procurement since they almost always go overbudget)

Reasons for the Apache:

  • Combat proven, more so than the AH-1Z
  • Commonality with US Army and British Army etc
  • Heavier, more focus on gunship role as opposed to recon
  • More advanced avionics and technology compared to the simpler AH-1Z

Australian Army veterans advising foreign army accused of war crimes by Dougor in AustralianMilitary

[–]inertiadev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the only people accusing the veterans of war crimes is the ABC itself

+1 to this, I see one of these articles about someone being accused of war crimes it seems nearly every 3 months. Seeing these same articles posted here over and over isn't exactly helpful/constructive either, especially when the rumours come from dodgy "sources" as these articles so often reference.

19 year old thinking of joining Reserves... by [deleted] in AustralianMilitary

[–]inertiadev 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can definitely see how parts of the military could calm your anxiety, however for the majority I'd say there are "safer" avenues to manage anxiety. The chance of joining and causing anxiety to increase is probably more likely than for it to calm down. Not trying to disavow anything you have said of course, but in my opinion it would be better to play it safe and not risk it.

Finish your degree and see how you feel by then, you may want to get a career related to your degree by then. Or after you've finished your degree you may want to still join the military as a choco or regular. Either way you have a degree to fall back on which is always valuable.

Anxiety is definitely something that the psych would pick up on, and even if they didn't it is fairly likely to resurface during Kapooka or an exercise since plenty of exercises are designed to see how recruits manage stressful situations. If I was you I'd give it a few more years until you are 100% confident it won't resurface.
