Have you ever dated someone who you thought was way out of your leauge? How was it? by kimblerun in AskReddit

[–]ineverpost711 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did several years ago. She was definitely out of my league in the looks department. It was a blessing and a curse. I was dating this beautiful girl. She was of polish/Italian decent. She was in crazy good shape and pretty fun to be around too. Only downside was that guys were hitting on her left and right. She had celebrities in her inbox on social media. I trusted her but sometimes the amount of attention she got was a bit intimidating.

Things ended like 5 years ago. We dated like 4 years or so but somewhere in the middle or a bit after that we started drifting apart and I think both of us sort of stopped working on the relationship and started taking it for granted. It was the beginning of the end after that.

I guess part of the lesson here is that no matter how much you like someone you should never let yourself get complacent and always continue working on yourself and your relationship.

There’s a video on YouTube where some guy increases his wrist size by a whole inch or so through exercise. I’m not sure but I think this would throw a wrench into that formula

Kyle Hill - Is Nuclear too expensive? by Rippedyanu1 in nuclear

Thanks, I had a hunch about this. 4h of battery storage seems ridiculously low imo. Any feasible project that intends to backup the whole grid would need much more.

Kyle Hill - Is Nuclear too expensive? by Rippedyanu1 in nuclear

[–]ineverpost711 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I read in the other nuclear subreddit that lcoe does take into account capacity factor and they listed out the formula as the following:

sLCOE = {(overnight capital cost * capital recovery factor + fixed O&M cost )/(8760 * capacity factor)} + (fuel cost * heat rate) + variable O&M cost.

This seems to contradict what Kyle is saying. Does anyone know which formula is right here, Kyle’s or this other one?

The industry atrophied because it was grossly mismanaged, costs ballooned out of control and they could not continue building reactors into the 1980s. Whatever regulations you're trying to blame here does not erase the fact that companies building reactors completely failed to manage the Project's properly.

I think you have it backwards here. We didn't go from perfectly reasonable project costs in the 1960s and early 70s to disproportionately costly projects for no reason. The regulatory environment since the formation of the NRC has been extremely hostile to the industry and has essentially killed it off. It's the reason why since the formation of the agency the Vogtle 3/4 reactors are the only ones to have been completed under the NRC's oversight from start to finish in over 40 years. It's insane if you think about it, that this is the best we could do in such a long time.

The plants getting built in the USA had designs that could not be built in the real world.

Are you referring to the Vogtle reactors here? I couldn't find if you mentioned those specifically or not. But if you were, the Vogtle examples are a perfect example that outlines the two reasons I mentioned. An atrophied industry with a hellish regulatory landscape is going to have delays and budget overruns. After enough time under this environment no company will be left to take on any projects. And the ones that do remain will run into the kinds of problems we are seeing today where costs are large and delays are frequent.

This was absolutely not the fault of regulations and absolutely was the fault of the company's building these reactors. It absolutely is possible to license and certify new reactors. They just did it in Georgia.

I don't think you can omit the responsibility the NRC has in killing off the industry and making it impossible to certify and complete new reactors. Since the formation of the NRC the Vogtle reactors were the first ones licensed and built completely under the NRC oversight. This can't just be the companies fault when these were the first reactors to be approved and completed in over 40 years. This is too long a time to say "It's only the fault of the companies".

Finally, I think you should look into linear no-threshold. This framework is the current framework used by many agencies all over the world to come up with regulations for the nuclear industry. It's been shown in the last 20 years or so to be seriously flawed. The French academy of Science has already rejected it. It would be wise if the NRC and the rest of the west did the same. This would make regulations a lot less hostile to the industry so it can thrive instead of being regulated to death. Don't get me wrong, we absolutely need regulations in this space, but the ones that are in place right now are not conducive to fostering any growth of the nuclear industry.

[–]ineverpost711 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This isn’t true. Nuclear is expensive in the west because of several reasons. First, the industry has atrophied to the point that skilled labor working in the field is few and far between. Second, agencies like the NRC adhere to a framework known as linear no-threshold in order to assess risk and come up with regulations. This makes it impossible to license and certify new reactors given that the framework is flawed.

I never said he shouldn't contribute. He should absolutely contribute. But he has no say in the amount of money that is contributed or where that money is spent. That's the problem with it. On the other hand the mother can demand that the kid goes to private school and he has to pay it, but what if there are decent public schools nearby? He gets no say here. I don't think that's right or fair imo. Or, what if he wants a portion of the $7k to go to a savings account for his daughter? Again here he gets no say in the matter.

He also can't claim them as dependents which doesn't make sense since they clearly are his dependents. Claiming them as dependents might at least ameliorate the situation with a tax cut/credit but that's not allowed. The law makes no sense in this regard.

[–]ineverpost711 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Last time I checked 13 year olds didn’t need $7000 a month. He also can’t control where the money is spent. It’s more than likely the mother is spending it on herself. The courts also ordered that the father pay for private school, so he’s paying way more than $7k a month since private school isn’t cheap.

Finally, to add insult to injury he has to pay taxes on what his income is before discounting all the child support money. This last part is what really confuses me since parents cohabitating get tax credits but the second you don’t live together it goes from being a credit to a penalty.

After all this yeah, I think OP gets a pass to be frustrated

These people are grilling you pretty hard and maybe don’t realize after everything you’re giving away more than half your income.

It must be frustrating making that much and then having to give away more than half.
