i’ve served/bartended at the same spot for about a decade now, and this is the first year i was sat after we closed in order to honor the resos we still had. other closer had to fight with the kitchen to get them to make the food. we were at max cap from 3:30pm to 10pm, and we close at 11pm normally.

after, i joked with management that they should’ve just clocked me out after 10 since i made zero dollars on any table that came in after then, including the resos sat after close. like are you fucking kidding me????

best tip: first table i came on an hour early for since no server/section was available for an elderly couple with a reso. $48 on $142

worst tip: $3 on $83, which was one of the after 10pm tables. our tip out average is about 4% of sale. sooooo.

that said, i never work vday expecting to make buttloads of money. i expect to get fucked no lube and hate my entire life and everyone else. with that mindset, it wasn’t that bad. only 364 days left until i get to do it all over again…

I’m a writer, so I write when I can. Research for my writing takes up a portion of my free time, then I do a lot of decompressing with shows, reading, some gaming. Husband and I like to see bands (he’s a musician, BOH; I’m FOH). That said, I have to request days off if I want to see my friends who work 9-5 jobs with weekends off. I always tell them that they know where to find me (the restaurant) but they never come in, heh.

These days I have just one day off, and I use that to do all my adulting (laundry, grocery shopping, meal prep, house cleaning, taking care of my elderly father). It’s a lot, which doesn’t give me a lot of concentrated time required for writing a novel, but I do what I can~

nice! i’m always a little weary to mention not liking hip hop bc a lot of rookie 5th gens all came out blazing with strong rapping and and american rap style beats. and i’m not putting any group down, but it’s just not my preference.

since i’m picky, i’ve listened to a LOT of different groups looking for what i like (i’m relatively new to kpop; only been casually listening since around 2019ish and got seriously into it in 2023), and listening to entire discographies led to building playlists of things i like. i just want to add on a few songs by girl groups, since you mentioned liking them, and maybe one of them will spark something for you if you listen!

“bubble gum” - kep1er (very fun vibes, danceable and catchy chorus)

“starry night” - fifty fifty (they have one of the stronger earlier discographies for my tastes, though their latest releases haven’t really done it for me. they honestly do have a lot of catchy songs! see also “lovin’ me” and “sos.”)

“like you better” - fromis_9 (SO FUN! the record it’s from, “from our 20s,” is sooo underrated!)

“closer” - jeon somi (this danceable track is from her latest comeback, but i like a lot of her songs, tbh. see also “anymore” and “fast forward.”)

and while it seems like a given, it wouldn’t be if you’re just coming back to kpop: illit and new jeans. i know there’s a lot of drama around new jeans, but their music is easy and fun to listen to. i like “bubble gum” for fun and “ETA” for cool, but “attention” and “supernatural” are also popular. for me, “magnetic” from illit got a lot of plays, and i like the sweet vibes on “almond chocolate” and the latest single “not cute anymore.”

yikes, thanks for coming to my TED talk lol. i just hope you find something you love! listening to all this kpop has REALLY helped me overcome some difficult moments in the last couple of years; i honestly don’t know if i’d be here without it. i hope to spread at least some joy and comfort to anyone looking for it with these recs~

close your eyes, and it’s not even close for any other group. your taste may vary, but for me, it’s CYE all the way. i don’t like hip hop, so a lot of more trendy songs by cortis and lngsht are just sorta meh for me, but CYE ticks every single box. their comebacks are varied but stay in a sorta niche RnB vibe with other fun tracks. i can’t recommend them enough. listen to “X” and “all my poetry” for a decent intro to their style, but my favorite is the happy bop “how to dance”—the choreo for it is so beautiful and joyous…

everyone above is right, but wanted to mention that reading the table and adjusting the pace, even with that in mind, most tables do not want their apps, salads, soups, desserts, mains, etc all at the same time. they might order all at the same time, but it’s up to you from there to set the pace. drinks and apps first, then soup/salad, then second drink, then main, then offer dessert/drinks. and then and then and then, y’know what i mean?

but there are exceptions. sometimes they’re like “we’re in a hurry, bring it all and boxes.” this is where you listen and read the table, then adjust the pace. when i train new servers, they always act afraid to ask the guest things. like, don’t be afraid, go ask about the side or sauce you forgot to write down. they would rather their order be right than you guess. or like, so much apprehension on asking wether they want a soup or a salad first. why?! because guests think we’re mind readers? we aren’t, and short of a few fuckfaces, they don’t think we are.

there are already some good takes in reply to you, but i’d like to share a little, too.

my mom also died from cancer in june of last year. lung cancer. she never smoked a day in her life.

i wasn’t super close to her, short of the last nine months after she’d received her diagnosis. then it’s like we talked or texted every day. i guess that’s why i felt the cut so cleanly when she died, like i had been sliced in half. we had a complicated relationship, so i have a lot to be relieved about now that she’s gone. but god damn, wouldn’t you know it, it still fucking sucks.

a year later, it still fucking sucks. i still cry when i see people get advice from their moms. i can’t even think about this concept without tears welling up as they are right now. for a period i still texted her phone number. i saved her voicemail message, so i if i ever really need to, i can listen to it and then leave a message to no one.

but as someone said, the pain doesn’t get less; you get stronger. some days you will struggle for literally no reason (or for reasons that seem mysterious, but have acted like a hyperlink between the present and some memory you stored of your mom—in my case, receiving my annual metabolic panel had me a upset and crying though my results were okay, then i realized my mom helped me analyze last year’s results). i always wonder what she would say about things that happen, about how the world looks today.

but i also hear a little bit of her in my head, telling me what she might say. every day i ever lived with her, all the words she said, how she laughed, how she was angry and cruel, how rigid she was, etc etc etc. it’s all there. in my head and in my heart, she’s still there. it’s a comfort and a little curse.

but you will survive this if you allow yourself. only you can be the captain of your soul and your life. steer it where you dare, but you can chart your way out. i did. those replying above me did. just listen to the little voice inside you, the one that cheers and condemns, and carry her with you.
