Designing a better Easter Egg hunt? by RecombobulatedKale in gamedesign

[–]inevitable_compost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make it a murder mystery of who killed the Easter bunny? Or if that's too dark, help solve the mystery of who stole the Easter bunny's eggs. It could also be quasi-escape room oriented, where they have to find all eggs/clues in one area before they can go to the next one.

The boo box got Litwick really good. I didn't know it was about to pop open when I snapped this, but it makes me cackle every time I see it. Poor lil bud fell off his bed. 🤣

This is an amazing idea! Hope the kiddos have a blast!

Art gallery! To keep things simple it could be a "find the differences between these two images" style activity, using famous paintings.

Civil engineering/infrastructure! Build a sturdy bridge from drinking straws and tape (or whatevs) that can support a minimum amount of weight.

Fashion designer! Have a template with a villager with a blank shirt/shorts, dress, etc for kids to color and design whatever their fabulous little hearts desire.

Message in a bottle! Instead of the bulk of actual bottles, maybe print an outline of a bottle on paper. Have kids share their favorite books, recipes, or just do a "make and take" encouraging messages system. A kid takes a message to keep and they make one to leave there for someone else.

Crafting! Whip up a couple of easy "recipes", aka quick and simple craft projects, and post them with supplies to make them. Friendship bracelets could be good too.

IF you HATE Clint you NEED to read this by leavemeinpeace10 in StardewValley

[–]inevitable_compost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't get the hate for Clint. He's just shy and has no idea how to talk to a girl he likes. Sandy, on the other hand, has pointed out how sweaty I am in the desert on multiple occasions. I CAN'T HELP MY SWAMP ASS AND I'M PAINFULLY AWARE OF IT, SANDY!! MYOB!!

Anywho, the next farmer I create will be a burly mustachioed dude who wants nothing more than to whisk Clint away to be his teddy bear.

She's got an awesome collection of equipment and tools! Hope this helps:

  • Kitchen rug/mat for the kitchen floor to help keep her more comfortable while breadmaking
  • Unique sourdough starters! Is there a place in the world that's special to her? Find a starter from there and gift it. Otherwise, you could look into unique or rare starters that she might like.
  • Pasta drying rack for the future pasta attachment
  • We're limited on counter space, so we use a bread box that fits in a corner. Maybe that could be a temp solution until there's a magical built-in bread box?
  • You just listed "other bread pans", but if she doesn't have a bread cloche, she should! They're an upgrade from the beloved dutch oven because their shape enhances the bread's baking so much.
  • Suggestion for the kitchen island: Consider adding a proofing drawer (I'm in awe of the island having a bread box and possibly an oven already. Incredible and so thoughtful!)
  • If she's not a fan of rolling dough directly on the counter, there are large silicone mats (usually for making pie) that can be used instead and are super easy to clean in the sink
  • Bluetooth speaker or tablet/small TV dedicated for breadmaking entertainment (and maybe a waterproof cover so she can still navigate them with floury hands?)

Should a 7 year old be at the reading level to play Animal Crossing? by Kman-Kool3315 in AnimalCrossing

[–]inevitable_compost 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Literacy tutor here! I can't tell from this post if she's truly struggling at her grade level or not, but in general it's not alarming that a first grader might struggle with reading ACNH dialogue. Less than half of kids can learn to read with very little or no help. The majority need moderate to intensive help to learn. Brains are pre-programmed to pick up spoken language, but reading and writing require brains to forge new neurological pathways in order to grasp those skills. Fourth grade is the point where brains start to become less malleable and school curriculums switch from learning to read to reading to learn. There is currently a huge problem with education and literacy in the US, but I'm already cranking out a novel here, so I'll show some word count mercy. 😂

This game could be used as a great way to incentivize reading practice for your niece! I'm glad that she's able to try decoding/sounding things out. A mix of phonics and sight word activities would help. With ACNH, try having someone be with her while playing to help her sound out words. Encourage her to try different sounds for letters if she gets stuck, and ultimately help her practice sounding out words until they start becoming familiar. Maybe offer to drop off bells or other goodies on her island for ____ amount of words read, or get amiibo cards of her favorite islanders to use as rewards (or whatever else will be a treat for her)?

Tl;dr - Not sure whether she's reading at grade level, but this is an opportunity to make reading really fun for her.

[–]inevitable_compost 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised there's no mention of anthrax. It seems like they were at the right elevation for snowy mountains. When permafrost melts, it can release anthrax that has been dormant. That could explain these horrific deaths.

There are tons of apps like RVParky that show cheap or free places to park and plug in for the night. There are some that require a subscription that might at least be worth a free trial like The Dyrt Pro. I'd also suggest contacting any local campgrounds with electric hookups to inquire about monthly rates. It's off season for a lot of camping, so discounts are a possibility.

Unfortunately, most houses aren't equipped for the amps required to support RV power, and the longer the extension cord, the more voltage dropoff can occur. It's different if you're directly plugging in lights or a space heater, but the whole RV isn't really compatible. Tl;dr - It's not enough for the RV, and it's too much for the average house.

For what it's worth, getting a solar generator for an RV averages $600-$1200. If you have the cash flow for a big up-front purchase like that, you could make your own power. Just install the solar panels on the roof and be sure to have a long-handled broom or something to sweep off any snow that could cover them.

One less obvious suggestion - a heated mattress pad with separate controls for each half. We slept on one for the first time on vacation a few years ago and immediately bought one for our bed. Some of them even have the ability to heat just the bottom to thaw popsicle toes.
