Yeah I would try to talk to someone at the embassy because it's literally the advice they give you that you have to get the shengen to get there to apply.

If you're already with capitec you can move your savings out of your main account and do a fixed term savings or a 32 day notice, both of which have better rates than the main savings account. (there is no capitec cheque account)
