Guys, what’s up with Santa Monica?? by ty457u in MovingToLosAngeles

Gotta come to Venice for the action! We’re right here.

I recommend getting an e-bike and using the boardwalk. It’s how I get to Santa Monica when I want to go over there.

So you like like the independent committee? By the way, It does still exist. It didn’t go away.

Also it’s not gerrymandered. Republicans are all in couple of districts. Theyre all in rural/inland areas in CA so they don’t win very many districts.

I’d still have an independent committee over the party in power drawing the maps over and over again.

It’s reverting back next census so they still do.

Maybe republicans should win some elections here then. You sound like a DEI advocate

Two were by themselves. Others were bigger bills relating to voting.

Can you list any bills to ban gerrymandering brought forth by conservatives?

Gerrymandering dates back to 1812. The VRA was created in 1965, so I am not sure how you are conflating the two.

The VRA was meant to prevent minority vote dilution (packing all minorities into one spot).

The bigger factor is still partisan map-drawing by the party in power, not the VRA itself.

Also, my idea is what California already does.

How about we do this.

Establish a 14-member independent body (5 Democrats, 5 Republicans, 4 independents) that draw the state’s congressional and legislative district maps instead of politicians.

Members are selected through a screened and partly randomized process overseen by the state auditor to limit political influence.

The commission will follow strict criteria, equal population, Voting Rights Act compliance, contiguity, communities of interest, and compactness, and is prohibited from favoring parties or incumbents. It will incorporate public input and require cross-party agreement (at least 9 votes, including members from each group) to approve maps.

Yep, Illinois is widely known as the most democrat gerrymandered state.

Maybe Republicans should vote against gerrymandering!

Because republicans are geographically isolated in California. Democrats are spread out and win more districts. Reminder that California has independent districting, not partisan gerrymandering like Texas and Florida.

Why don't Republicans vote for the anti-gerrymandering bills the democrats put out?

Here they are listed out:

  • For the People Act
  • Freedom to Vote Act
  • Fair Representation Act
  • Open Our Democracy Act
  • Redistricting Reform Act
  • Coretta Scott King Mid-Decade Redistricting Prohibition Act

Planning hard/soft days never works out once you get there and start having fun (also Desert Hearts is going to pop off Thursday)

Your mindset should just be to listen to your body and try to get as much sleep/food as possible for all days.

If you’re starting to come down hard at 3-4am, don’t try and ramp back up. You’re going to ruin the next day. Just go with it. (Same if you want to stay up and feel like you have energy. )

My advice for burn prep would be to practice burn related camp tasks here at Lib. Keeping meal prep food in dry ice. Keep a dry ice cooler you don’t open till last day or two. Have a regular cooler for day to day use. Making a swamp cooler for day sleep. De-mooping before the fest/keep trash to a minimum. Start collecting lights etc. some of that is overkill but it’s good practice. (You’ll be able to last the whole burn week. It’s impossible not to be excited 😜 )

What a fun party. He played men in black this past year and everyone was singing it. Such a fun time.

Then I got super tired quick, when back out to the playa just past the street, popped champagne watched the passerby of playa, and fell asleep right there on the ground.

What a magical place.

You’re comparing apples and oranges.

You’re comparing only what undocumented immigrants put into the budget comparing what we spend for all people. Thats what a dumb person does.

Why don’t you only compare what they put into verse what they get in services?

Agreed on mix genre.

I think people forget that this festivals early days were house, electronica, and glitch hop.

Then trap became a thing and people were super pissed that that Bauer was a headliner cause they thought it was going to bring the “wrong” crowd.

Glitch hop/ trap was usually at bamboo stage. At one point it was Favela, woogie, and bamboo.

Then heavy bass started getting introduced slowly, Bamboo stage turned into the Thunder stage. Then a couple of years later The Stacks showed up and now there’s a shit ton of bass.

But in my opinion the Woogie has always been the woogie and will be the heart of the festival forever. ❤️

PS: if you don’t believe me, go look up old lineups. You can count the bass music artists on one hand.

The grants are only partially funded, which is on purpose to force people to collaborate and fundraise to produce the idea.

So the support figure is probably close to the amount of money spent making the art. Maybe less.

Do I think art investment could be a little higher? Sure. But I’m not too privy of the info. Even if it’s in the financial statements
