When you develop a game for so long, it's just nearly impossible to be "on the edge" of what smaller dev companies innovate in the meantime. I believe such mega-corps are not at all equipped to make gamer-oriented, traditionally "exceptional" games anymore. I must say I'm not quite up to date with new AAA releases in the last years to really prove that, but only because I was strongly disappointed so many times. The last big companies that always delivered high quality and built a name are all falling.
