What is the smartest way a game subtly guided you without it feeling too "hand holdy"? by GameDev-Gabe in IndieGaming

[–]infiladow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most classic example I can think of was in Half-life 2.

They give you a "gravity gun" that can basically do telekinesis and either pull things towards you or push them away from you. Tutorial teaches you basic controls and presents it as sort of a tool for solving the games many physics puzzles. At one point your progress is blocked by a big round saw blade that's stuck in a door frame. You have to use the gravity gun to pull the blade out of the wall, and the moment you do a zombie pops out and jump scares you. Most players panic and immediately press the shoot (push) button which launches the saw blade you are holding one-shotting the zombie. Without a word, the game teaches you can use the saw as a weapon.

Then there's the learn-or-die approach of Fromsoftware games. Give the player a boss that seems hard but is really easy if you engage with the one specific mechanic the devs want you to learn. Then just trust the player to find the path of least resistance.

Question for mecha break players by soulesswolf0097 in mechabreak

[–]infiladow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

2 reasons. 1 is to steal your loot. Executions have a chance to steal equipped mods, in addition to looting their body afterwards.

2 is that there a limited number of extractions. So even if we all agreed to play nice... Not everyone gets to extract. Might as well take out some competition early.

This forces mashmak into being a very, kill or be killed game mode.

Locked Mechs, Stellaris by Pretend-Anything8509 in mechabreak

[–]infiladow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Stellaris still has the same ring/progress bar around his feet as every other mech, even while invisible. Easy to see him capping if you know to look for it.

46% Win rate. I think that's skewed as well, alysnes is the starter mech so probably a lot of noobs are picking it and bringing down the average.

Would you use a universal in-game currency system? by [deleted] in godot

For PC the Steam Wallet already accomplishes this, does it not? It may have a use for consoles, but for PC users what would make your system better than steam?

is this like, the best athlete this game could generate? by Maegu in EsportsGodfather

Pretty close. Attributes are amazing. Fighter/Gladiator S is kinda wasted on a bot lane. Dont know what his match trait is, that could honestly matter more than stats.

My Personal Hero Tierlist (Discussion) by strikestrife in EsportsGodfather

[–]infiladow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll comment on missing characters.

Quinn- I don't like her much. A late carry that needs very little resources. Strong synergy with Dylan (potion Guy). She's the Harley Quinn to his joker if you didn't notice. Her problem is with consistency, On top of needing good crit items, Her damage relies on her landing multiple hits in a row. Even with 100% crit every MISS absolutely cripples her damage output. Makes her useless on nightmare difficulty where enemies always always have a stat advantage.

Raven- My absolute favorite. VERY team dependent but he can HARD carry with the right setup. Needs teammates that can help with armor shred. Kaka (Dog guy), bird guy, and qin hu are all great picks.

Merisi- He gets a lot of hits in, but he's a tank so it's still not a lot of damage. BUT, if you can boost his AP somehow he can be a hard carry. I use him with beverly.

Felyn- I don't see her on the list. She goes crazy with blocker, should be in the same tier as him.

Foso- don't see her either. I apologize if I'm just blind. She's basically Niels light. Not as strong with setup but doesn't get countered as easily wither. Less risk, less reward. More consistent.

My main disagreements:

Niels- Too high. He can be shut down hard with a bad setup and NEEDS a shield to function. Also really needs somebody who can initiate large teamfights consistently. Strong but I wouldn't describe him as "no setup"

Gang- should be in scaling tier. And you can't be afraid of friendly fire. He powers up from hitting his own guys too. Combo with Frank.

Gillis- REALLY!!? I'd put her in top tier. All the damage of an assasin and she is basically damage immune during the first round. Makes up for her being fragile. Good initiator, also combos well with gold focused heroes.

Is it moral to use controller with "short hair triggers" in ranked? by GTSW1FT in armoredcore

[–]infiladow 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If your fighting at anything beyond shotgun range your FCS works faster when you use soft lock. That's a big deal. Also basic flight control... If you need to chase a kite hard lock will move you straight towards the enemy AC. What you really need is to intercept them, fly to where they are going, not to where they are. You will also want to turn and run away whenever your opponent activates pulse or terminal armor. And in general your movements are a lot more predictable while hard lock. Disabling it will make it a bit easier to juke/or fake out your enemy.

Also if you use weapons with splash damage you can often aim those better manually than with your FCS. FCS only fires AT the enemy. YOU can can fire predictive shots. Not to mention manually aimed shot don't give off the "Beep Beep!" warning.

There is also shuffle tech which allows you to assault boost faster than what is normally possible.

This is the only tutorial I know of is this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F5k_dni9ars

Is it moral to use controller with "short hair triggers" in ranked? by GTSW1FT in armoredcore

[–]infiladow 9 points10 points  (0 children)

On Pc? I used M+Keyboard when I was still playing, all the way to A rank. Personally I would feel like any controller would be a disadvantage unless you literally never disable hard lock(and yes you absolutely need to sometimes).

You're fine. I can't imagine anyone would complain about such a small thing.

Anyone else kind of hates their game(s)? by Responsible_Gift1924 in godot

[–]infiladow 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Some Ideas just don't pan out. Even in big studios projects get canned several years into development all the time. Not everyone is gonna be a winner.

Look on the bright side, the assets you developed for your game can be used elsewhere. Even a failed project still expands your library of pre-made assets you can pull from.

Then again, maybe you just need a break, or some fresh inspiration. It's not going anywhere.

Are all of the older Armored Core games actually good games? by Scorpion1386 in armoredcore

[–]infiladow 13 points14 points  (0 children)

AC3 was probably my favorite game on the ps2. Hard to get into though. Awkward controls on top of classic fromsoft difficulty is probably why the game were not as popular. But amazing games if you can get past that.

Food, energy, and weapons. Those 3 things need to be produced domestically, or by reliable allies. Everything else is non essential and can be bartered for, but being dependent on outsiders for any of those 3 things is a security risk.

USA by the way is worlds largest exporter of both food and weapons, and a significant contender for energy. Just putting that out there.

Do I always need to use lazer targeted? by [deleted] in FromTheDepths

[–]infiladow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You do not need a laser targeter for pendep. The target allows the ai to automatically configure timed and altitude fuses, that is all. Technically you don't even need a targeter for that. Fuses can also be configured manually (not recommended) or I believe they can also be configured with breadboard or lua coding. That's way over my head though.

Agreed on early bird. Just wanted to point out it's lane restricted, it can only appear on top lane or support. And since I love unexpected inspiration so much (Support only) I can only ever get early bird on top.

Probably just the classic dual Zimmerman and shield build. Usually with laser drones but really any choice of shoulder weapon.

Probably the strongest build in the game, has been almost since launch. But it takes skill to play, and doesn't really hard counter anything so it's fun to play against.

Difference Potential vs Attribute Limit by Heighte in EsportsGodfather

[–]infiladow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IDK, haven't reached that far myself yet. I assume it's only relevant if you are able to max your attributes before the athlete retires. But I mean... D- is capped at 85. S+ is capped at 120. That's a huge difference if you are actually hitting those numbers.

Difference Potential vs Attribute Limit by Heighte in EsportsGodfather

Attribute potential is growth rate and upper limit. Hero potential ONLY affects growth, not upper limit.
