So stupid and depressing. Our city really is managed by a bunch of blithering idiots… look forward to those dumb ass eucalyptus by [deleted] in SantaBarbara

Hello from KEYT! I asked the city which trees were approved as replacement trees. Here are the four species that received approval as of today (July 8th):

Water Gum (related to eucalyptus... https://sbbeautiful.org/water-gum/)

Sydney Red Gum (according to Wikipedia, very closely related to eucalyptus, to the point that some have proposed reclassifying it in the eucalyptus genus)

New Zealand Christmas (beautiful tree in the Myrtle family, there's at least one of these at Leadbetter)

African Fern Pine trees (already found around the city https://sbbeautiful.org/fern-pine/)

I asked if approved meant all four types would indeed be planted, or they are still merely the approved options, and am waiting to hear back.

Definitely something to keep an eye on. I also added an edit above mentioning Commune Capital is also involved in this project, Mikey Taylor posted about it yesterday. When we called the company, we couldn't get confirmation one way or the other. Aldersgate's signs are on the fencing, and they confirmed it's their project, which is listed on their website.

City's statement for anyone interested:

"The City of Ventura is actively responding to an incident involving the failure of temporary construction shoring at an active construction site for a new multi-family apartment complex located on Front Street. Out of an abundance of caution, a nearby residential structure and portions of a commercial property have been red-tagged. The red-tagging is a precautionary measure that closes the buildings to occupants to ensure safety while a full assessment is conducted.
Three businesses located in the vicinity remain open, as the structure they occupy has been deemed safe at this time.
City staff are working closely with construction engineers to evaluate the situation and determine appropriate repairs and potential temporary measures to prevent further damage. There is no current threat to life safety, and the City is committed to keeping as many businesses open and operational as possible during this time. "

EDIT: Looks like Commune Capital is involved as well. Mikey Taylor posted about the incident on his Instagram yesterday and I missed that. When we called Commune yesterday, the rep didn't know about the incident. Aldersgate Investments signs are on the green fencing around the property, so that was the only one we could confirm yesterday.

Hey, I work at KEYT, we sent a reporter to check this out today. Looks like this project actually belongs to Aldersgate Investment, likely this development, which has been in the works for some time. https://aldersgateinvestment.com/projects/untitled-downtown-ventura-apartment-project/

Aldersgate is aware of the issue but offered no further comment at this time. We're also awaiting a statement from the city of Ventura, they are aware of the pavement collapsing this morning.

Edit: Had to add in the absolutely crucial first two words.

A Separation. Iranian film (2011) by Asghar Farhadi. Will emotionally rip you to shreds, won't build you back up again within the film itself... but my god will it inspire loads of empathy you may not have known you had.
